The Canon P will focus much closer than 3ft, and I use a modified J-3 with it that gets to ~0.8. That is as close as the modified J-3 will get.
I suspect the camera will focus even closer. The trick, as the OP has done, is to file down the threads so the RF follower can track the RF cam as it goes closer than 3ft. That is the point where the RF Cam of the lens is flush with the lens threads.
