Hi

Just picked up a black Ultron 35 1.7 in (what appeared to be) almost perfect condition...

I'm now a bit worried about a couple of things and i am sure someone here will know more about it.

The aperture ring is smooth until it gets to about 3.5 where it becomes quite a lot more stiff. About as stiff as my pentax 50mm 1.7 i have on a mv-1. I am pretty sure this is not normal so am wondering why it might be and if it is more of a problem than simply its 'feel' to use. Would it be easilly fixed?

Also, the aperture ring does not seem to lie parallel to the focus ring, and seems to get further away from right to left when viewing with the hood at the top. I this normal and part of the design/operation of the lens?

Thanks for any help!

Does not sound normal, my sample is smooth from 1.7 on down.

It could be that the aperture ring is coming loose. If you are in U.S., I'd send it to Cameraquest for a fix.

This is what i am talking about...

Surely its not meant to be like that?

No Way!

It seems to me that the lens has been opened and then put together again carelessly. Like the front part of the lens would have been screwed on "false" thread, as we say in my country.

The other possibility is that the front part of the lens is attached some other way using wrong method or wrong technique.

Anyways, it's not possible to shoot first quality pictures with a lens like this. Because the front part of the lens deviates from the optical axis, the plane of sharpness will be always unsymmetric.

I would return the lens ASAP and demand full compensation. If the seller have been aware of the condition of the lens, one could say that there is a clear case of fraud in here.

Yep - looks like someone took lens apart and didnt put it back together correctly. I'd check how it performs wide open and if you like it, and if you got a good deal on it - I'd keep it, as fixing this issue yourself shouldnt be hard.

Tom,

The 35/1.7 is a wonderful lens. Unless you know what you are doing I think you should send it off for professional repair. I agree that CameraQuest is the place to start.

Best regards,

Bob
