Dear All,

Just noticed something new in my black Ultron. My silver Ultron 35mm/1.7 has a small screw that is flushed in the focusing ring. The black Ultron that I just acquired has a protruding 'mushroom' head screw that is below the focusing ring. I am wondering whether fellow Ultron owners here have noticed this?

Regards,
Peter

Yep, mine (black) is the same as yours - protruding type below the focus ring.

and mine.

Wonder why? Could be a modification made after a certain point and it's just coincident that Peter's chrome one is an early model? Or a difference required by chrome plating?
I know some of the early ones had some iffy quality control and some were claimed to fall apart.

mine has a serial # in the 9160xxx range

cheers...

I forgot to add that my silver and black Ultron are both 9160xxx series. Judging from the response fo far, it seems that the construction of the silver and black Ultrons are really different! Any more response from Ultron owners?

Why not ask the dealer from whom you purchased it? Or just e-mail Stephen Gandy at Cameraquest. He seems to be very good about this sort of thing . . . answering questions & all that.

I did asked my dealer but he seemed to be as clueless as me. Maybe asking Mr. Gandy would be a good idea.

Peter, any reports on the Tsunami & earthquakes down your way? Terrible situation. :(

Stephen (among others) also replies to posts on the cvug list that you can access from his website. good luck.

I doubt that Cosina went for so much trouble having different constructions. I will say it is because those black and chrome screws come from different supplier.

It is a horrible disaster! The current death toll is more than 11,000! I must say that Singapore so close to the disaster area is spared! I did felt a bit swaying in my apartment early yesterday morning! A friend of mine is stucked in Phuket, Thailand and she e-mailed that she lost her passport and credit cards but have managed to contact the embassy people to help her to get home! She said the speed of the water is unbelievable!

My heart goes out to those people! Amazing how undersea earthquales generate waves that can be devestating thousands of miles away as in this case with Sri Lanka. I'm happy for you that Singapore is positioned to avoid any problems from this. 8.9 on the Richter scale is a monster! A real killer.

We must pray for the safety of the people affected and also for the souls of the victims.

All this discussion of screw heads pales into insignificance in the face of the tragedy of the natural disaster. But in case anyone in the future reads this thread seeking info...

...I have a black Ultron (serial 993xxxx) and its screwhead is flat and flush-mounted. I concur with the person who suggested that there's no real difference in design, and Cosina simply got slightly different screws from different suppliers.

Just to share with fellow Ultron users. As confirmed with Mr. Gandy, the differences in the position and the type of screw on the Ultron is really due to changes in the structural design between newer and older Ultron lenses. But according to him, the differences are strictly cosmetic and has no effect on the structural integrity of the lens.
