There are areas of England that don't seem to feature in published landscape photography very often, this last year I've started a long term project to photograph some of them. I include samples here but there are more on my website.

I can also say that café at Dungeness is very inviting. A bunch of us from Sussex head down there once a year usually in January/February as it is just a fantastic place, so other-worldly, and when you've been out waiting for sunrise having got up at 3.30am, got to Dungeness by about 6am and sat waiting... waiting... ahhh I love it down there. But that café is inviting when they open it up with your hands frozen cold...Oh the joys of photography (and I really mean that!)

And it is.
I suppose it's old school to stay with the golden mean at 8 X 10. Are you more interested in larger image than 35 mm porportions (I'm assuming that's your format).

There's a station in Pewsey, so rail travel is an option. Salisbury Plain is more problematical, particularly somewhere like Imber which is a restricted military area. Access to Imber is only granted on a couple of days each year and wandering around is dangerous due to unexploded ordnance. My brother was working for Defence Estates until recently and was able to gain access to these off-limits areas. He's now working for the National Trust, and still looking after parts of the Plain.
Dungeness has it's own railway, the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch line, which uses miniature steam locomotives.

A car definitely helps but as nickdando says both the Pewsey area and Dungeness can be accessed by public transport

I'm not sure that they come more old school than me. All the recent stuff is using a Mamiya 7ii (6cm x 7cm). I thought about large format a few times but I don't think I can afford the 'running costs'.

Great take should be taken, there are often also 60+ton Challenger tanks trundling about.

Excellent landscapes, Chris, and a laudable idea to pick up on often overlooked landscapes. Some of Faye Godwin's have always been amongst my favourites - are you familiar with them?

Best of luck with your project - would love to see more as you take them!

Phil,

very familiar, I have a number of her books and it is her work really that I turn to when seeking inspiration. Her book on Romney Marsh* is the only published work I know of covering this area of England.

Sadly, I merely aspire to the quality and strength of vision that she had.
