Recently souped 2 rolls of Tri X 135, reeled in steel hewes reels.

Noticed that the first few frames ( of both rolls, though on one roll its worse ) had black patches. Uneven developing ? I agitate them 4 times in 10 seconds.

*Contact print tomorrow!

Film layers touching. It happens very easily with all ss reels. Mostly the first few frames suffer from it.

Dang! How to counter-act this issue ?

Using plastic reels is not an option. Hate them flimsy buggers.

I thought I eliminated this problem by buying Hewes reels!

Don't blame the reels (unless they've been damaged/bent). You probably just need some practice loading them. Practice in the light so you can see what's happening. Then practice with your eyes closed. Once you get it, it's a piece of cake.

Huh?
Not in my experience.
I always use a SS reel that has no tabs or clips. Just insert the end of the film into the inner space and start spooling.

One thing that can mess up the film is bent reels (the two circles are not perfectly parallel).
