Does anyone here know the uniterpolated resolution of the Epson 4990 scanner? I am getting huge files using it (160MB - 1.4 GB), especially with large negatives, so any superfluous bits would be nice to dispense with. There is nothing in the documentation that speaks to this issue, although you can set the resolution as high as 9800 dpi in the scanning software.

look on their website and look for optical resolution, for large negatives you can easily use something under 2000, the maximum optical resolution on flatbeds is never the optimum.

I think they advertise 4800 optical (my 4490 says 12,800!), but really, that's way too much for any practical purpose, and from what I can see, somewhere between 1200-2400 may be the actual limit.

For 120 film, my computer gags on 4800 dpi anyway.

To save more space, try JPEG instead of TIFF.
