Hi I think you remeber the photos whose author was not known.
Well it wasn't a pilot it was a photographer of the German army meber of a "Propagandakompanie" named Johannes Haehle.
He also took pictures of crimes against humanity in Babi Yar and Lubny wher thousands of Jews were murdered.

Many of the people shown were killed after the photos were taken.

I wish I could have posted something in th vein of the first batch of pictures

Really interesting story.

Amazing: the Photographer never handed the shots from the massacres in to the PropagandaKompagnie he was working for. And, his widow sold them twice, in the 1950s and in 2000. Also, B&W film copies of the original slide film shots of the massacre were 'lost' in the lab of the Justice Department in the 1960s. And these shots, although now known, are not linked to from the article.

Bottom line, some people have no decency (selling pictures that depict a hideous crime), others had/have trouble coming to terms with Germanies wartime past.

Kudos to everyone that helped solve the mystery, the internet can be agreat thing sometimes!

Very interesting that they have managed to find the photographer's name and so much of the history behind his work.

Lothar Buchheim (the author of "Das Boot") also kept very many of his 'darker' photos (about 6000 I believe) from his time on U-96 during the war. He was also supposed to be shooting for the German propaganda machine. Though his work does not cover such atrocities like Haehle has (at least not on the same level). they do show the side of war the government did not want its people to see.

In the book "Ubootkrieg" that he wrote after the war you will find a lot of his haunting images.
