I have a '58 Kiev 4 without ridges on the meter cover .
i have just seen a rough , or just dirty '57 with a similar pre-ridged meter cover.

Does anyone know anything about what appears to be a rather more delicate casting ? And if they are unusual ?

Thanks

Rick - what year is your plain cover camera ?
.. and fanshaw - how many 70s Kiev 4s do you have without the ridges on th meter cover ?
I am intruiged - I was led to believe that the cover casting was ammended early on ?

There are at least 2 different meter covers on Kiev-4s and another type on 3/3A. On the Kiev-4 one has a bevelled edge like an old fashioned picture frame enclosing a recessed centre oblong. The other has the bevelled edge but the oblong is not recessed (I assume this is the ridge-less one you mean).
I have Kiev-4s with the second type of cover made between 1970 and 1978. Perhaps the cover you have seen is something different?

The cover on my Kiev 4 1958 has no raised / indented ridges to strenghthen it .
It's much cleaner looking - but it has dints , so I guess that's why they altered it
