There's a rumour about an upcoming (late summer) "short zoom", large sensor compact camera from Canon.
Link: http://www.canonrumors.com/2013/05/a-new-large-sensor-powershot-coming-cr1/

I'm posting this because I find it very likely - speculative APS-C sensor size aside.
It's a direct answer to Sony's RX100 (and its upgrade that is probably in the making), and there's also the Coolpix A and GR 2013 to compete with... without forgetting Fuji's purported XM-1.

This end of the year will be very interesting.

been using G1X for a good while now and its capable compact: great lens & zoom range, good high ISO, manual controls, compact. all else is fine except hopeless autofocus lag. been hoping firmware update speed things a bit but no avail. OMD or XPro1 would probably serve better in this category, with bit more $$$.

glad jarski mentioned the G1X, it's the camera everyone seems to have forgotten!
all the APS-C offerings from Canon from the past few years have all been "meh" not even imaging sensor improvements at this point

It is exciting that more and more are getting into the game of large sensor compacts... but it had better focus a lot faster than the G1X or their mirrorless camera has. Canon seems to be afraid of eroding their SLR base, but they are giving the rest of the market to Sony, Fuji and the M4/3's makers.

For Fuji there is also the rumored xm1 which is most likely going to be an LCD only camera as well, but priced at entry level..

The omd may have the fastest af of all the csc cameras currently.

Actually thats a liquidation price for the EOS-M.
I think these camera manufacturers need to face up to the fact that the point and shoot camera has been replaced by social media enabled smart phones. shoving an aps-c chip into the old p&s without a built in finder and social media access is a non starter. Those who appreciate a big chip want a viewfinder (forstreet cred if nothing else) and those who want an omni present camera have switched to the cell phone.
Its time to create a new segment - perhaps affordable full frame EVIL

As good as camera phones are today, for me they are not good enough yet for following reasons
- need better high iso
- better control of shutter release then what I have seen so far
- better overall iq
That does not mean I don't think it will ever happen, technology gets better. I think for average consumer, the camera phone is already good enough. When u look at this market segment, I doubt that the product managers for these companies are going for the average consumer.

For me, I don't care if it has a vf on it, so long as I can put the thing in the front pocket of my jeans, otherwise I don't care...

Whether that camera has a 1 inch sensor of the rx100 or m43 or apsc or ff, I am looking for good iso up to 1600, good af, good fixed lens and sensor iq that fits in my jean pocket. The rx100 already pretty close.. But for me it is only good up to iso 800 barely. Maybe next gen 1 inch sensor will do better. So far both the Ricoh grd and Nikon Coolpix A match my criteria and in fact look good to me up to iso 3200.

For me, LCD only is a non-starter if it is not pocketable. I can give up on vf for this one feature.. I am sure as technology gets better, camera phones will be the better choice.

For non-photographers maybe... I think people that are into photography, and not social media, can still appreciate something that acts / feels like a camera should ergonomically. There are still huge benefits to using a larger sensor P&S over a cell phones.

Not for me, I'm very excited about the new Ricoh GR.

Thom has a recent survey:

http://www.sansmirror.com/newsviews/survey-says.html

Sharing has the lowest priority among people who spent decent money on a small camera. There is a place for blurry phone camera snap, just as there is a place for a more serious compact (A, GR). Finder has its place, but it also come at a cost in size, so it is no coincidence that RX100, GR and A are all without finder.

Perhaps the question to be asked is - why the sudden interest in APS-C mirror less viewfinder less compacts by the major camera manufacturers?

For me, phone camera will be almost there if there is a dedicated camera button: pull the phone out of your shirt, press the button and it should be in camera mode instantly, press it again to snap without significant shutter lag. IQ will get better eventually, but ergonomics is a bigger factor, I think. I hate having to scroll through the touch screen to find my camera app, it is worse than menu dive.

Two possible reasons.

1. They are trying to make a compelling case to buyers that they should want to buy a dedicated camera instead of relying on their camera phone. The larger sensors should provide significantly better images than a camera phone will.

2. They are catering to enthusiasts. Starting with the Fuji X10 and Sony RX100 but now moving towards APS-C cameras is the fact that there is a group of enthusiasts who are willing to spend $600-$1000 on a compact camera that can significantly outperform a camera phone or a conventional P&S.

Of the two reasons, I believe the second is far more likely.

- Compete with smartphones on the one hand, and with µ4/3 on the other
- Recycle their sensors even more (go Canon, go!)
- Hook compact/smartphone users into APS-C - i.e. the bigger system cameras they offer

Talking about the devil... I was about to quote myself regarding the competition from cellphones, but since you're referring to the Galaxy camera: http://petapixel.com/2013/05/08/sam...alternate-galaxy-4s-with-a-much-nicer-camera/

Samsung is working on an alternate version of the S4 that they’re calling the “S4 Zoom.” (...) the rumor states that the Zoom will come to market sporting the same 16-megapixel sensor found in Samsung’s Galaxy Camera.
