Update Question

I have downloaded the latest firmware update (1.13, I think) even while my X100 is in the mail. Fuji's update instructions list what items to have ready, among them the USB cord.

Why is this necessary? I think you just format the SD card, put it in your computer and copy the file from computer to root directory of SD card, then put the card back in the camera.

Is there something to do with the USB cord?

No don't worry about it - you have the right idea. When you put the card back in the camera you hold down the 'disp' button and turn it on, and update it from there.

These directions were written by someone else for the Mac. I assume Windows would be similar.


1) Download the Mac .dat file to your Mac.
2) Format a camera memory card IN THE CAMERA so it has nothing on it.
3) Switch the camera off, remove the card, put it in the card reader.
4) Drag'n'Drop the .dat file to the card.
5) Use Cmd-E to eject the card from your Desktop.
6) Insert the card in your camera, making sure the battery is fully charged.
7) Hold down the "Back..." button as you switch the camera on.
8) Follow the instructions to update the firmware. DO NOT SWITCH OFF HALFWAY, it will leave you with a dead camera!
9) Voila! Switch off.*
10) Switch on, and first thing format the card to erase the firmware file.

Thanks, Willie, I have a PC so I'm not sure of the corresponding command to this:

"Use Cmd-E to eject the card from your Desktop.'

I've always just removed the card from the reader.

My half two-cents...I had the same question when updating my Fuji X10. Fuji says to have the cord, but then I didn't use it. (Also, I click the remove card icon in the lower right of the screen...before removing flash memory sticks and memory cards from my "PC" laptops...but not everyone does. It's generally a safer way to "unmount" an external storage device....or it could be an illusion.)

Robert, I've never "unmounted" my cards before and never had any ill effects, but I see where I can right click on the drive icon and "eject" safely. I think I will do that just to assure a trouble free update. Meanwhile, the camera is out for delivery on the UPS truck!

Well...yeah. I guess I haven't either, to be honest. It may be a lingering superstition from the old world (of spinning harddrives the size of Maytags).

Meanwhile, I just received my shiny, new X100! ...just no chance to use it.

Just to update this thread with my experience. Many advised me to eject the card on the computer or unmount the card on the computer and then format the card in the camera each time.

This advice went against my experience with Nikon, but I thought maybe it was required for Fugi. What I found was that ejecting the card from the computer and formating the card in camera made the frame counter start over at 1. So I tried doing it my usual way of simply pulling out the card after images were transferred and then sticking the card back in the camera with no formatting. That did the trick. The sequences continued in the correct progression, giving me a total count of actuations.

To clarify, first I have gone totally to jpeg for both my D7000 and the X100, These jpeg engines are so good these days there is no reason for me to mess with several different proprietary raw formats. I can use Nikon View to transfer images to the computer. It is set to wipe the card clean after transfer. I can use Nikon View to handle files from both cameras. My stock agencies are very picky about artifacts but they have accepted even third generation jpegs after processing with PS5.
