Upgrading from M8 to M240

oh man thanks for all the input guys. I caved and bought it. It isnt that much heavier, the one I held in the store must have just had a heavy lens on it.

Thanks again guys. IM sure I'll miss the M8 but I cant wait to start shooting with this M240. going out to shoot now, weather is nice.

Congratulations .... I'm sure the camera won't disappoint. :)

I went from M8 to M240. You won't look back. It's not just the MP or low light or normal lens angles. The camera has a huge number of capabilities that the 8 just doesn't have, like weather sealing, easy exposure comp, live view with overlaid level (=SLR lenses, superwide M lenses, precision-focusing super-speed lenses; whatever you want...), shooting a six hundred pictures on a charge, using cards bigger than 4Gb, and getting high-speed flash sync. Also video.

People can harp about CCDs, but there is precious little in rendering differences between an M8, a D700, and an M240.

Loved my M8. Miss it dearly. Love my M9. Love it dearly. Someday I will move to the M240, not because I need the latest and greatest. Just a logical progression. One thing about the 240 that appeals just enough to make me consider it over M9 is the live view capability. Imagine, an M that can spend all day as an M, then do macro duty in the studio with the EVF and adapted Micro Nikkor, then shoot some bird photos next morning with a telephoto and EVF, then head out for a day of people snapping as an M. Kind of appeals, no?

Still love my M9. Not complaining.

I had no problem using larger cards on M8 and M9

...

Anyone who thinks the M240 puts out lesser files than other M digital cameras is simply not up to the task of being an actual photographer in my opinion.

First: preferring the rendering of one sensor assembly to another is highly subjective. We are compelled to respect anyone's subjective opinion. Preferring the M8 sensor assembly rendering to the M240's rendering has nothing to do with the CCD or CMOS sensor bed components of the assemblies.

The difference between in-camera JPEG rendering algorithms must be considered as well unless raw files are mentioned.

For raw files, the sensor bed itself is only one component of the sensor assembly. For years there has been no difference between storing electrical charge created by the photo-electric effect via CCD or CMOS technologies. Both store exactly the same thing, electrical charge. Electrical charge does not have subjective properties. CMOS sensor beds are less expensive to manufacture and have less read noise compared to CCD sensor beds. CMOS sensor beds also use different signal (voltage) timing technologies to enable continuous output. But these differences can not affect subjective rendering in still photography.

What happens to the light before it reaches the sensor bed is another matter altogether. The lights' wavelengths are filtered at least twice and focused by micro-lenses before they reach the sensor bed. These steps can affect the relative, spatial, charge levels stored in the sensor bed. The result could be different default rendering of raw data during post production.

Whether or not rendering adjustments could compensate for filtering/micro-lens differences is a different topic.

What fine pictures! I really like these! And you have proved your point: A good photographer will take good pictures, whether with one camera, or another.

There is always something more and better..just around the corner..then the next..and the next..and the next..ad infinitum..
Better to make your photos great..on any camera..any lens..
Dont become a gear head..become a good photographer..
You will be happier in the long run..

Wise word...I couldn't agree more .

I went the upgrade path from M8-M9 because of full-frame and no IR filters. Upgraded from M9-M240 because of much quieter shutter winding, and not wanting to deal with a potential long absence and (at the time) no permanent fix for the sensor glass corrosion problem. Image quality improvements were not even on my radar. Looking back over images I took, I can't really see where they would have made a huge impact on any files I kept. OTOH I do see where improvement in my skills would have made such an impact.

I am still happy with my M8/M9 combo. I never liked taking photos of very dark scenes that require high ISO. I live in sunny Florida anyways.

Just received my new to me slightly used M240 to either replace or supplant my trusty 10 year old M8. Spent today shooting some of my old haunts and can't believe how much I missed full frame! That alone made the upgrade from the cropped Leica worthwhile. The image quality is to my eyes much better but I am still working on the color difference from CCD to CMOS. It's not better or worse just different. Apparent sharpness as well as contrast is also better on the FF. So far I am. Pretty happy, we will see if it continues!

I have looked ahead at some of the classes and the minimum requirements for some of the class is 10 megapixels.

Chris, go for it and enjoy shooting!! With the M8 or the M240... :)

I too however would be highly critical of any class requiring a certain number of mega pixels. This has nothing to do with good photography in the end. Maybe instead of finding another camera, another class would have been ok too?!

I also went from an M8 to an M240 with 2 years break. In that two years I used a Fuji X100. And it was okay but ultimately decided that I needed my M back. Loving my M240! Some weird sick part of me wants to buy another M8 to shoot with sometimes.
