Urgent: 90/2 Or 75/1.4 !?

Join the poor people down here with a VC 75mm f2.5. Smashing lens, served me well on my Leicas

the CV 75 is a great lens, but I'd rather buy the CV28/3.5 that has now been discontinued evethough you weren't in need of this focal length.

I am young, and yes I throughly envy Charles' financial situation.

However, through my short life I have seen scores of overpaid people (friends, children my of parent's friends, etc.) purchase superfluous items just because they have the money. I don't know Charles, so I really cannot properly quantify his purchasing, but my experiences have left me relatively jaded with regards to hasty spending. I am only expressing my hope that Charles isn't like those whom I know who buy just to buy.

I am sorry if I was quick to deride you for being similar to those whom I know.

Buy the lens you want. Others sometimes get a little pissy because they can't afford the equipment they want. Snide remarks are common here. I'd go with the 75 'lux. It'll be more expensive to buy later. 90's are common and if not the asph model it should be cheap anyway. If the lux does not suit you, it can be sold later on.

Please don't turn this discussion into a "Jealousy" or "economic affordability" thread. Obviously, anyone unexperienced or who needs help/practice in the photo field will not get anything useful out of expensive lenses. And why wouldn't the CV 75 fit the bill? I am 99% certain that a blind test between the 75 CV VS. 75 'Lux will have the 75CV as a winner 50% of the time.

you can buy some and sell some which you dont like 🙂 it doesnt matter really as long leica equipment doesnt go down drastically at price. Im planning to buy at least different 10 ones for 50mm, lol 😀

I'd chose both lenses which you're considering because both are so different lenses. Noctilux and 75 lux are not really same although. 90 cron is cheeaap 🙂

There's no need to apologize, and this geture demonstrates that you're figuring it out already!!!!

I hope that things turn for you, at 18 you've got so much ahead of you to be as jaded as you say you are. Remember, it's the journey not the destination.

Buy whatever makes you happy. Nobody ever got shot for buying Leica lenses and unless there is a drastic downturn in the market short term ownership shouldn't cost you too much.

I've frequently had a problem sorting needs from wants, consequently I've got a 90 and a 21 (M8 and R-D1) that see very little use. Most times both cameras have a 35 or a 50 mounted and that serves for probably 97% of my RF photography. To be honest, if I need to go longer than 50 (75 on the R-D1, 67 on the M8) I tend to use an SLR (usually a DSLR nowadays) or use my feet - YMMV.

Whatever you choose, enjoy it.

A couple of other observations - snide remarks are not common on this site; Erikh - I know where you are coming from, but we have to accept that different paths exist and not be too hasty to judge. Also, if you really are 18, then you're maturing well😉

IMO, at the end one might even save money going after quality from the beginning, rather than letting hunger grow steadily, and buying more expensive gear as evolving in the hobby.
least I cannot call myself so good tradesman that I could profit (rather come even, at best) from the gear that I buy and sell.

trick is just to know in advance how to invest the sweet money, and that's the point for this thread (least thats how I interpret it).

Hell, just buy them both, and see how you like them. Then if necessary get rid of the one that you like less.

And post some pics showing what you like and what you don't like. Pass on the savings and everybody wins!

I would presume that usccharles is a grown man since he works 7 days a week 80hours++. Let the man decide on what he wants to use his money on. If I had the money I would buy a Lamborghini. Im not a racecardriver, but I would still buy a racecar. Really dont see the point that If you arent a Pro you cant buy nice gear. If it wasnt for all the ordinary people buying Leica gear, I dont think the company would have survived all these years.

You're right. And I didn't judge the OP's work since I haven't even looked at his gallery. That was not the point though. I just feel anyone is entitled to give an honest opinion without automatically being a jerk :angel:

Yes, I would buy a Lamborghini too, but the truth is I would never ever use it to its full potential and I wouldn't have minded the few folks who would have recommended me a Bimmer M5 instead, for instance (Yes, the one with GPS, air bags and all the bits that makes one a "better driver" and less poor).

i got the 75/1.4 😀 did some test shots with the 75 and 90 and decided the 75 frame lines worked for me better, and the f/1.4 was a big factor. i love to play with slim DOF.

talked to my repair guy today and i'm taking the lens to the shop tomorrow to have the lens adjusted for backfocus. I've noticed that the backfocus becomes more pronounced as the focal length gets longer. my 28/2.8 had barley any noticiable backfocus, but this 75/1.4 has a considerable one. its not so much so that i wouldn't be able to get used to it and adjust for it, like i do on my Nocti, but i feel like for such a long lens i need all the help i can get when it comes to getting the proper focus.

will let you all know when it gets back from the shop and i get a chance to take a few pics.

Leica has discontinued the 75/1.4 so, for that reason, good to get it now. Add the 90 later. They both take stunning pictures, whether they're APO/ASPH or not.

OR.......get the 90 and wait on the 75/2. Can't go wrong there, and possibly cheaper. Choices, choices.....

Surely the only thing to do is try out the lenses in question. This should not take too long with digital. In the end why do so many people buy things without trying first? Its bound to lead to disappointment in some cases. Any Leica dealer worth their salt should be only too willing to trial equipment. Even after purchase most goods have a period of approval.

A pre aspherical 90 f2 is no match for the newer aspherical lenses 75 or 90, but you could probably work this out in about 30 minutes taking some pictures. I would actually rate the 2.8 90 Elmarit latest version as a bit better than the pre aspherical 90f2, but it does not quite compare to the latest 90 or 75 for shaprness / copntrast / colour rendition in my opinion. The 90 2.8 Elmarits are usually pretty reasonably priced and have the additional advantage of bieng nice and light. Im not too bothered about the maximum apperture of f2.8 as Im happy to push the ISO setting. Attached 90 2.8 at f4 ISO1250
