I got a xa in front of me, there are no batteries in it, when I push the shutter button down it feels really solid and nothing happens, the winder wont advance so I asume it is advanced. Will the shutter fire with no battery inside? I need to know fast because im leaving very soon back for china and need to know if it needs to be returned.

The XA won't get out of bed without batteries. There is a battery check position on the backlight lever on the bottom. When the shutter button starts to act finicky, 9 times out of 10 it is time to change the battery.

And don't worry about the solid feel of the shutter release--the electormagnets inside of it barely move when taking a picture and the only way I know that a picture actually has been taken is the sound of the two shutterblades moving.

I think the shutter button does not 'move' you are instead compressing solid plastic/rubber, it is a really light sensitive button when it is ok.

Some of the XAn n=1...4 depend on an AgO but my XA4 is ok on alkalines, ran out one weekend never bothered with AgO again.

Just my luck, on one of the few days I didn't check the Oly forum someone posted a question that I *can* actually answer :p

And the battery well can be dodgy sometimes. Worth cleanly thoroughly with Ronsonol, as (obviously) if this is the problem new batteries won't help.
