I recall reading an article by Jonathan Eastland some time ago showing how to adapt a wide angle R lens to an M camera ... or maybe he is using Nikon wide angle lenses on an M camera? I think he uses a Novoflex adaptor. Anyway, recently I saw an early Leitz 22228 R to M adaptor for sale at Peter Loy so decided to try and use my c.1970 21mm Super-Angulon-R lens on my M3. The lens will probably not match the performance of equivalent M lenses but should be useful for the few times I need this focal length with an M camera. Focusing will be by estimate. The viewfinder is a Leica 12014 which is switchable between 21mm, 24mm and 28mm. Note the plastic lens release button on the adaptor ... Leitz used these plastic buttons on early Leicaflex SLR models but they proved to be too fragile so were later changed to alloy. Spare alloy replacements are available from Don Goldberg ... I recently had to replace a plastic lens release button on my L'flex SL. The 21mm Super Angulon R was an Ebay purchase and cost less than £200 ... the cheapest equivalent M lens would probably cost at least £700 used so the adaptor is a cost effective solution for wide angle M photography.
