Used My XE-1 For A Shoot Last Night

It was a commercial gig. I used it in place of my Canon 5Dll, which I had previously used. I was photographing the choral group C4's (http://www.c4ensemble.org/) rehearsal. Needless to say, the XE-1 performed flawlessly. I used the 18-55 and the 55-200 zooms exclusively at ISO 2000 - 4000. Flash is too distracting to the group, so everything has to be photographed in available light. There were a couple of moments where I wished I had the 14mm (my next purchase), though I needed to be distanced from the singers as not to be distracting. Compared to the 5Dll, white balance looked fantastic, and those Fuji X lenses are sharp.

One thing for certain, the XE-1 is a heck of a lot easier on your wrists and hands after 4 hours then he 5Dll! One con, there were moments that I wished the AF was faster.

Yummy, that 14mm lens does look tasty. I got the Zeiss 21 2.8 in M mount, favorite street lens along with a 50. Wish there was a Speed Booster for M mount lenses...

I have toyed with the idea of getting the 18-55 zoom. Have you found that the auto focus is good enough in low light?

did you also wish the AF was more accurate? i found even outdoors with the 18-55 in good light i was having issues getting correct focus on an X-E1

oh and yes the 14mm is a champ, it's like a mini SWC with the X-E1 attached

I didn't have that much problem with the AF on the 18-55. Sometimes my subjects were moving and the AF was just not fast enough to capture the change. I had some hunting with 55-200, but at times I had to shoot through music stands and singers.

Question, did you try MF with zoomed view and focus peaking?

Sounds like you were shooting in situations similar to many I shoot in and that is my preferred method of using any of the Fujinon XF lenses. I use the AF-L button to focus in MF mode while zoomed in (hit the command dial first). Tweak as needed, using focus peaking to confirm. Half press the shutter release and you are back in normal view for framing and shooting. I find it as fast, if not faster than repeatedly focusing for each shot in AF and with a much higher percentage of in focus shots.
