Using a 35mm on either my MP or M2, there is still a little area of the picture outside the 35 frame lines.

I want to get a 28 but don't want to bother with an external finder.

Does anyone use a 28 in this similar sitiuation using just the camera finder and would you think you lose much in terms of framing not using an external finder?

I use a 28 on 0.72x M7 and MP bodies with no problem, but I'm lucky enough to have excellent sight and don't wear glasses. Framing is an exercise in approximation with rangefinders anyway. 😉

I used to use the 28 frames in the 0.72 but do not like them in the slightest. I now use a 0.58 body for 28mm, which is MUCH better IMO, but if not, would happily use the 0.72 with a small finder on top for when I want a better idea of what is going on outside the frames. I find I can work much faster with less tight frames bec I can appreciate the frame, composition, inclusion etc in a snap rather than having to search corners.

I would recommend trying with the regular lines in the finder and considering a hot shoe finder if you want a looser, faster feel

does a finder really enhance the reality of the view
compared to not using one?
It enhances the "reality" but not necessarily the utility. My sense on this is that at 28mm, you don't really need the external VF to create a reasonable composition, but go down to 24mm and wider and the finder becomes useful. The wider you go, the more you need to be aware of that huge foreground if you're not close enough to your subject.

I use 28 on M2 by using the 90mm framelines for 1/3rd composition. Works very well once you get used to it.

28 is "natural" in that it corresponds to the FOV of both eyes open.

Too clichee for your Fred ? For me, the 1/3rd grid is just as good a reference than the patch in the middle. And it moves with parallax correction.
