my one cent:- 50mm will distort on 35mm film if close to subject, try 80-90mm for portrait. some aspherical lenses are great, I have a 12-24mm lens which is fine if subject is centered. and what is a bit of distortion between friends .

Hi Everyone,
When I first noticed this I fired off an email to Ricoh and they responded very quickly with the letter below. It's nice of them to take the time to write all this out. It repeats/confirms what many of you have been saying. It is quite a fun and unique camera that will take some getting used to.

Dear Xxx Xxxxx,
Thank you for contacting Ricoh Japan,
For your questions, I guess there is no problem on your camera.
Your camera looks reacting normally.
I am afraid that perhaps you may mistake the meaning between distortion and
wide angle. We can see the characteristic with the wide lens, in your photos.
Generally, every lens has a distortion. If you take a photo in a flat subject, shooting in a tele-side will be less in distortion than in a wide-side. Because the difference between 'the distance from the middle of the subject' and 'the distance from the edge of the subject' is less in case your taking a photo with a tele-side.
The GR Digital has the 28 mm wide (35 mm film camera equivalent) lens, and
we can say that the GR Digital will be better than other digital cameras
with similar specifications lens, such as Ricoh Caplio R4, Caplio GX8 (They
have the 28 mm wide side in the lens). But if you compare with a digital
camera that has long focal length more than 28 mm (35 mm film camera
equivalent), the GR Digital's distortion will be noticeable.
[discussing the sample photo I posted in the second posting of this thread]
We can find the distortion was corrected in the square flame in the back of
the subject, because the lens looks like parallel to the wall. But the head
of the subject was located in front of the wall, some skew appears, and
this is a characteristic of the wide lens.
The bottom photo was not taken with parallel to the wall, so that you can
find more skew.
We can say the same thing with the other photo.
If you take a photo close in a subject, you will find this skew than
backing away from a subject.
I hope you can enjoy with your camera full using of the characteristics of
the lens.
Sincerely yours,
