Using Canon T-50-2 hood on Nikkor 85mm f/2

I posted a question last week asking about a hood for my Nikkor 85mm f/2 lens. There were a couple posts that suggested using the Canon T-50 lens hood. I was under the impression that it had a filter thread of 48mm and therefore would fit my Nikkor which has the same filter thread.

Someone has a Conon T-50-2 for sale but states it is for a lens with 49mm filter thread.

My question: Are there two types of T-50 lens hood? Before I buy this lens hood, I'd like to know if it's the correct one and that it will fit. The seller states that it is a T-50-2.

I'd appreciate hearing from others if the Canon T-50-2 hood will work with my recently purchased Nikkor 8.5cm f/2 lens.

For some reason, the above post was moved to this forum and I think nobody saw it, which may be why there have not been any replies to my question. I can't understand why my original post asking about the hood for this lens was NOT moved, but yet the above post WAS moved. Go figure!

Anyway, if anyone has any thoughts, I'd love to hear them.

I got a T50-2 from VictorM and use it on my chrome Nikkor 85 f2. Although from appearances it seemed the right size, it would not go on the lens. I bought the hood anyway, because I didn't know where I'd get another one. I eventually used pliers to extract the aluminum piece that I think one uses to lock it in place. That made it way too loose, obviously. I cut four pieces of art paper intended for watercolours (it has good thickness) to the right dimensions, and glued them together with white glue. Once dry, I worked them into the groove that I'd taken the aluminum strip from. I'd measured accurately enough that the paper was a slightly tight fit. I thought this was a laughably temporary fix (papier-mâché to hold your lens hood on?), but it has held up fine for a few years. The hood slips on and off securely. If it loses its grip, another won't be hard to make.

This is my experience with the T50-2 hood. You may or may not be interested.

Oh yeah, have fun with the lens; it's great.

The S-50 hood, not T-50, and the S-50 does work. It has a screw down clamp. It was made for the Canon 50/1.4 which uses 48mm filters.

The T-50 that I had worked too. Not sure if it was the 50-2 or 50, but AFAIK, they are both made for 48mm (Canon 135/3.5 and 85/1.9). Note that I had the S-50 and W-50 as well, also made for 48mm.

There is also a specific Canon 85/1.9 hood (currentl B+H has one).

The series 7 to hood adapter ring on both S-50 and T-50 is near identical (including the thumb screw), I have interchanged them and still have one at home.

Not sure what Grainhound's problem was, maybe the aluminum ring in the hood was bent ?

Now to go shopping again for the right hood!

Which is the one I would get if I were you.

As background, the Canon tele lenses 85/2, 85/1.9, and 135/3.5 all had 48mm filter thread.

Thanks, Roland. I was looking at the 85/1.9 hood yesterday on the B&H site, and trying to figure out whether that, the T-50-2 or the S-50 would work best and block the viewfinder least. I noticed that the 85/1.9 has straight sides, while the other two flare slightly; but the 85/1.9 seems a bit deeper.

This is old but I think it helps if someone check into this posting again, like me.

I got a Canon T-50-2 hood and it works perfectly with Nikkor 85/2, with a 48mm filter mounted. Without the filter, the lens diameter is about 0.3mm more than the lens hood.
With the filter, especially with a Canon 48mm filter of the same era (e.g. 48mm for 50/1.4 RF), works perfectly, no modification required.
