Using DD-X at 20c of 24c

I'm about to develop a six rolls of film with DD-X, the Ilford fact sheet for DD-X shows dilution and temp. times for both 20c and 24c. Is there any downside to developing my film at 24c like increased grain for example?

I'll be developing two rolls of 120 Delta 100, and one roll each of 135 Delta 100, FP4+ 125, PanF 50, all at rated speed and one roll of Delta 3200 pushed to 6400.

I haven't noticed any difference with temperatures ranging from 20 to 24 C, processing time adjusted, of course.

Ivo, thanks for your input, I didn't think it would be a problem as it was listed on the spec. sheet. I just wanted to get additional input from anyone who has developed at the higher temp. with the listed adjusted times.

Hey Richard long time no see, how are you? 😀

No downside in processing at 24C, higher temperature raises (some) developers' activity, this is why times gets shorter; grain is actually more a function of concentration & agitation that of temperature - in my experience with DD-X and other developer I use, temperature has no effect on grain. Living in the same city as you, I am developing at 24 C for the last 1.5 months or so, without any problem. Lately I use a lot of self-made developers like 510-Pyro, PC-TEA, GSD-10 & when needed Diafine and I haven't had any problem with the higher temp. Watch for uneven development if times get too short though; I wouldn't go below 5-6 minutes, though some use very short times without problems. If your times get to be too short, you can dilute your DD-X some more, to get your times back to a comfort zone - dilution, however, might affect grain so there you go back to the start... 🙄

Thanks, I developed them all yesterday at 24c I will get a look at them tomorrow. It is so much easier to get the chemical temperatures to 24c and keep them there, I just turn the air conditioner on and by the time I am ready to begin the temperature is right on and stays that way.

I just got a case of DD-X from Ilford, because they run out and I have to wait until they get more. Where do you get the ingredients for your homemade stuff, I don't know how comfortable I would be getting into that, I'm just now getting comfortable with store brands.

Hi Richard, I get my ingredients from the chemical stores in Eminonu and from the net; mixing chemicals is actually very easy, and the results are really worth it IMHO. 510-Pyro is a pyrogallol-phenidone staining developer, wonderful tones and highlight control, long tonal scale - gives box speed easily with all films I tried; GSD-10 is a glycin developer, suitable for stand developing and pushing, very good glycin tones - smooth!; PC-TEA is a vitamin-C/phenidone developer, kinda like X-Tol but better as far as costs, durability, usability, and very good results as far as tonal range. If you are interested, I can give you some 510-Pyro & PC-TEA to play with (including the recipes, which are freely available on the net anyway - no copyright problems here).
