Using R-D1s in the cold day

Hello,
I just traveled to Korea these days but found something unusual. The issue is when I took pictures in this morning, somehow the images are all blank but some are not. I've tried to replace another battery and SD, but still have such problem. I guess the low temperature could be a culprit? Since when I get back to the hotel, it works fine like before. Therefore, I checked the spec of R-D1, it says the working temperature is between 5 to 35 Celsius degree. I just want to know if you had any experience when using R-D1 in the cold day? I never had this problem before when I was in Taiwan. Thanks for your answer.

You might keep the camera under your coat and take it out just before shooting
(I do that with all my cameras when it's cold)

I kept mine rolled in a bag lined with a towel during a 25km hike in freezing temperatures. I had no problems that way. Non-Epson low capacity batteries might give all kinds of problems, including blank images and none-working shutters.

I have had instances when the battery just dies in the cold (under 10f), but it revives when warmed up. Didn't have any problems around freezing temprature though.

I just took my R-D1 out for five hours in the freezing cold of night and some medium-heavy snowfall. I used the Epson battery first, then the cheapo no name. Both worked fine, so did the camera. And I'm tellin' ya': It was seriously cold last night. Probably around minus 8 or 10 degrees celcius.

Chanpei, I hope it was the cold and not a sign of shutter failure. I have had similar problems, which I blamed on the cold at first; but it turned out I had shutter problems with both of my bodies, one after another.

That said, I have used my R-D1 in the cold, though more damp than freezing cold (although that's relative):

Thanks all the great inputs, seems like yours are fine even the temperature is below the spec. My R-D1s is still alive and kicking when I get back to Taiwan. Maybe mine is a corner case that can not stay in the cold weather? Even though that is fine for me since the coldest day in Taiwan is seldom below 10 Celsius degree.
Next time when I travel to the cold regions I will try another camera with me. That is a little bit pity 🙁

I used mine in -18C (nearing 0F) a couple of days ago, and no troubles. The battery life is dismal in the cold, but apart from that it didn´t miss a beat. I must add the air was very dry.

I just spent two days in the freezing cold of the Belgian Ardennes (out in the open the windchill was -10C or so). I kept the R-D1 under my jacket most of the time.

I took about a 150 pictures (without preview) with 2 and a half batteries (1 Epson, 2 1800mAh ones).

When the battery level was low the camera went into off-mode a few times after saving a picture, it would come back to life again shortly after. I would only notice after I pressed the release and nothing happened.

Press the release once and it wakes up, second time it fires.

As with you, battery performance was shortened by the cold, but not so badly that I couldn't use the camera.
