With a 40mm Summicron/Rokkor on the M3, the 50mm framelines can be a real bother. It's a lot easier to use if the framelines illumination window is covered with black tape (or other material which won't pass light), so that the viewfinder is completely clear of all obstructions except the rangefinder patch. Try it; you'll like it!

So you're shooting without any framelines? how is that better than using the 50mm lines as a close approximator? I guess the CV 40mm will be the same?

I understand that the entire M3 viewvinder field (without the framing lines) is a pretty good approximation of the field of view of the 40mm lens. Temporarily disabling the frame lines seems like a clever idea.

Yes, the CV is the same.
