Using the M9 and M8.2 for news...

Thanks JSU and JaapV, i'll look into the M and do some research on that and see. It might be I sacrifice and lens, and get one Leica and one Voigtlander / Zeiss lens for now and save. My train of thought was to buy as mch as I could when selling all of the larger DSLR stuff and maximise that money. But i'll look into the other options. Thanks again. Joe
 
Who ever suggested the M... thanks. WOW! Not to ask a dumb question, but does the M still allow you to focus like a traditional rangefinder along with the other new focusing aids?

Yes. You have the traditional rangefinder as well as the Live View via the LCD.
 
I shoot news (politics) and sometimes use my M9 but really I think a DSLR is better, maybe if you are shooting a feature or something for a magazine then yes. I would love to use a couple of M9s for work rather than carrying big heavy lenses and bodies but I don't think I would make any money from newspapers.
 
If you want a 2nd body, an option could be the Epson R-D1. No need for UV/IR filters, good IQ on iso 800 and acceptable at 1600, the crop factor vs the M8 is not that much of a big deal, imho. Also, it's not as expensive.

I agree with you 100%. If I wasn't moving to a non-shooting position I would keep all my DSLR gear and not even be here, except to drool.

However, I am moving into a photo position that will allow me to work on my own projects / features. So I can trim my gear load down to a Leica M and a few lenses and still be ready to shoot when I need to. Part of this whole transition is to get back to shooting what / how / when I want opposed to someone paying my salary and having a direct say over what I shoot or how they would like it shot. But thank you for the feedback. Everyone has really posted some great info and one person even persuaded me on the new M. I just hope my Nikon 400mm 2.8 sells for what I want it too.

Just to think outside the box. Have you consider Fujifilm X series? I don't have one, and never tested, but it's well regarded. Seems to have close ergonomics, awesome quality, high ISO, etc. You can get two X-pro1(or XE-1) bodies and the hole lens collection , 14, 18, 35, 60 (21, 28, 50 90, equivalent). I'd say it's pretty nice. You get AF and such. I like all manual stuff, though.

Just adding ideas. I know most of us couldn't think about choosing other system besides the M, but no costs are added to consider, test etc.
 
I've considered the Fuji line, I am selling my X100 tomorrow to start putting money in the bank for a Leica. I'm going to Leica because this will be the one time I can afford the buy in of a body and lenses after selling my DSLRS.
 
I worked for the AP for 3.5 years, and was initially hired because of my portraiture with my M2. I shot a number of political and the occasional celebrity portraits in the Washington DC area, and my Leica kit seemed to work for this kind of work. However, I quickly realized the Leica's limitations when it came to photographing things like press conferences or situations that required a quick shift from a wide shot to a tighter closeup and back again. In those instances the Leica could not compete (at least for me).
 
Personally I think and M8.2 and an M9 are the perfect couple, the 8 for BW, the 9 for colour, and slightly better hi-iso, paired with good lenses, you can do all you want with this combo, once your M8 get irrepairable in a couple of years, exchange it with a used M-onochrome 🙂
 
Vince, thanks. I wouldn't be pushing my shooting work load to pressers and the like. I wanted to have something for when I get feature ideas and can take my time with my subject and image. I know shooting with Leica won't make the features better, but its just wanting to own something of such high quality.
