UV Filter for Heliar Recommended?

I've never really used filters much, but I was wondering if this filter would be useful as a protective covering for my Heliar 50/3.5. I have the lens shade and cap, but they do detract from the compactness of the lens. Would using the CV filter be an unnecessary accessory or affect image at all? I just like having the lens ready to shoot without having to remove the cap every time and I feel the need to have it protected too.

Hi,
I keep a Leitz UV filter on my Dual Range Summicron. It protects the lens from most hazards except the sun's rays.

Hi Chris -

If you're not even keeping a cap on the lens during storage, then I would certainly leave a UV filter on it to protect it.

I tend to lean towards using a filter for protection, though I don't use one all the time. It depends on the shooting circumstances and I usually have a lens hood mounted, anyway. (In my own case, shooting color reversal film, the lighting where I live tends to be on the cool side, so I pretty routinely use an 81B warming filter.)

Thanks Murray. I always have the hood and cap on when not using the lens. And because I tend to be overly cautious, I tend to keep them on when carrying it around, only to remove it when taking a shot. I just didn't know if the UV filter would be overkill. I think I'll get one for when I am actively shooting without having to fuss with the cap/hood combo.
I appreciate the feedback. It's mounted on a Bessa R2 so no fear of ruining the cloth shutter.

Chris, I misread your statement about your use of the lens cap.

I think being cautious and protective of a prized lens is a good thing. I don't think a good-quality UV filter is overkill in circumstances where you feel the lens may be vulnerable to damage.
