Ok guys,
as I am expecting the delivery person to bring me my Contax G2 + 45mm lens, I have enough time to let my brain exercise some of the few working neurons I have left from earlier years.

I also just received my Carl Zeiss G 28mm and 90mm lenses.

I noticed the UV filters they came with, and started to wonder how would the different brands compare.
We all know, the difference between prestigious brand and a “regular” brand, can be huge when it comes to price.

But, how would they perform against each other?

I’ll stick to the only parameter I can objectively measure: reflection.

I will compare 4 UV filter brands I have available, and will include into the mix a control sample: Museum glass.

The object of this experiment is to compare the reflections produced by the tested filters, and compare them with the control sample. I will use the info palette within Photoshop.

I cleaned and dusted off the center part of all the filters, to make sure that no dust/dirt would interfere measuring the target area.
I shot all the samples within 90 seconds, at the same angle and during an overcast day to make sure no light variation would contaminate the test.

The test subjects shot were:
- Tiffen UV Protector
- Toshiba SL-1A
- B+W F Pro
- Heliopan UV
- Museum Glass

After shooting the samples, the files were converted to grayscale and reduced to their current size. No other manipulation was performed on them.

Here are the results:
(higher numbers are better)

- Tiffen UV Protector: 44%
- Toshiba SL-1A: 53%
- B+W F Pro: 56%
- Heliopan UV: 55%
- Museum Glass: 64%

The results I got from all the filters did not surprise me that much. The Toshiba filter did very well (I must say that, until now, I had never heard of a filter made or marketed by Toshiba).

What did surprise me was the “control” sample, the museum glass was significantly more efficient at reducing reflections than 2 of the top brands.

BTW, In no way I’m endorsing any particular brand or detracting from their overall quality. This is just an objective reflection comparison among different UV filters.

Hope this helps the objective, inquisitive minds out there to do some tests and share their results.

Best to all,
E.C.

Well, for some reason I cannot upload the Heliopan shot again.
I tried chancing its name a couple of times.

Hi Brian,
Unfortunately I didn't have a Hoya UV filter available for the test.

I think there is a noticeable difference between the Tiffen filter and the rest (both in reflection and in price).

Best,
E.C.
