Just FYI. The Epson V500 is now $199 with free ground shipping at the Epson store. At that price, I stopped researching which scanner to get and just bought one. Couldn't resist
Will use it primarily for 6x7.

I bought it for a little more than that last month. At that price, it's amazing! Be patient getting the software tweaked right, and don't bother with digital ICE, it's awful beyond belief. Just heal dust in Photoshop.

I was thinking of getting the V700 (I've read the specs), but how much more of a practical improvement is it really?

That is a great price, I just bought a V500 and paid $400AUD. But it is a great scanner and will suffice for all my scanning needs for a very long time, that is unless I start shooting large format soon.
I use my V500 with VueScan software, quirky but probably the best scanning software out there.

Just get it, I say. I bought mine about 3 months ago and it cost me £150 ($300).

Vuescan quirky? It's the only software I happily paid for. Yes, I paid for other software as well, but not happily!

Yeah, I call it quirky. I have been using VueScan for 2 years or so, and I still am surprised and perplexed by the interface and the settings you need to achieve a desired result. I just do not find the flow of VueScan as intuitive or natural as other software. But once you learn your way around VueScan it must be the best scanning software on the market.

FYI re Vuescan
FYI re Vuescan
The latest version of Vuescan now includes TIFF DNG, which opens directly with ACR. If you have the pro-version (which allows for lifetime upgrade), might be a good idea to download the latest version and play with it.

Thanks for the heads-up. I have not downloaded an upgrade in a while, so I will have to do an update and see what is new.
