Vacation photography information

I am going on vacation and will be shooting mostly outdoor photos. I don't believe I will be shooting any action photos. I will be using a 50mm lens and no flash. My question is this: what would be a good color negative film to use ( that I can easily purchase) and what lens speed and apateur should I use primarily. And would shutter or apateur be best. Thanks for the information in advance.

I shoot 100 & 200 iso royal gold (kodak) and fuji 400 Superia (i think). You should be able to find those films anywhere. Not sure about the rest of your questions but if you don't have a light meter try the sunny 16 rule. Have a nice trip. Alex

My favorite color film is Fuji Reala, asa 100. Great color, wide lattitude, and easily found. For later shots, Superia 400. The two can be processed anywhere and are both forgiving. Without a light meter, I would set it at f11 and around 125.

Richard speaks the truth - I tried a roll of Reala 100 last weekend at a festival. Great colours (maybe a little too great), low grain and scans good. In fact, I've decided to use this instead of Provia 100F (cheaper and less prone to human error).

I normally use Superia for C41 colour, get some 400 speed for low light. I always carry some Delta 3200 for emergencies too.

You didn't mention where you were going but if you plan to do a lot of landscape-type photography I would second the advice of Kodak Royal Gold 200 speed. In my experience the Gold 200 really seems to puch up blues and greens and makes nice photos when skies are part of the subject.

If you plan to make photos of people, buildings, etc., I suggest Kodak UC400. It will give you good, colorful results in almost any light and works especially well in the morning & evening.

Both films work well with Sunny 16 metering and will tolerate a stop of over- or under-exposure.

reala look very different to provia or velvia 100. Reala looks very warm to me which is great for soft fotos. But greens DEFINATELY look better with velvia 100F. provia look like a cool film to me, great for quite scenes.

buy a meter if your camera doesnt have one.

Also, give using slide film some serious thought. Results are worth the extra money.

I've just started trying Reala myself, and I really like the colors. But if you are interested, try Provia or Velvia slide film. The 3 dimensionality of slide film and color fidelity will really impress you.

Ill also add that if you print reala at the lab they will just look like superias. Scan them yourself for the 'reala' color.

Fuji Reala 100 is great, but I use only Fuji 400 because it allows me to be ready for "anything". Low Light, good. Very low light with a bean bag works really well. In a very sunny beach day (everyday down here) it holds up beautifully. My do all film and yes it is forgiving and has wide latitute. Even so Realla of course is a great film.

I have limited experience but I've been using a combination of Fuji Reala 100 and Fuji Superia 800 and I found that the combo works well when I know exactly where I'm going and what I'll be shooting. When I don't plan ahead, I just take Superia 400.

I also like using Reala 100 and Illford FP4 indoors in combination with a monopod. A monopod is quite compact and can be used in many places where tripods and flash may be forbidden (like historic cathedrals, sporting events, etc.). They can also make for good walking sticks.
