I have the opportunity to buy a black 5cm f/1.4 Nikkor through a private sale, could anyone give me some guidelines as to current prices? I have checked on Ebay and similar sites, but as usual prices are all over the place. The seller is asking 150 Euros, which is about 235 US dollars at the current exchange rate. Glass is clean, no scratches or cleaning marks, virtually no dust, but there are two flaws I have been able to determine upon inspection of the lens: slight oil marks on the aperture blades, and the engraving of a name on the lens. The engraving is not visible once the lens is mounted on the camera, it is on the chrome part near the rear lens element. Alas no lens caps are included.

So, how much would you value a black 5cm f/1.4, and how much should I take off that price for the 2 flaws I described? The serial number is 3902xx, it has the red C mark next to the Nikkor-S.

Thanks

Jan

Hi Jan, i'm Steve, from Italy....
Two mounths ago i've sell my double black 50 mm F1,4, on Ebay, at a spanish guy, for 120-130 euro... and it was very good.
Be patient and for 150 euro you can find a quite mint one, with no scratch, engraved and so on...
If i found a good one i will mail you.
Steve.

Thank you Dan for posting the link, this is very helpful.

Thank you Steve for your remarks. What exactly do you mean by a "double black 5cm"? While shopping for Nikon RF in Europe, there is virtually nothing to be found in Spain, I have no idea why. If something does show up, it is usually in a bad state cosmetically and more often than not not working properly. On the contrary, quite a few interesting items in Italy and Germany. Prices in the US are interesting with the current Euro-Dollar exchange rate, but shipping costs and customs duty can drive the total price up considerably. If you have any tips on shopping in Europe (links, recommended Ebay sellers etc), I would be pleased to hear about them. If you have something for sale yourself, please send me a private message.

Regards

Jan

There are very nice generic hoods from heavystar on ebay. Any 43mm filter will fit.

With regards to oil on blades, the Nikkor 50 is very easy to take apart and clean.

Thank you digitalintrigue for the link. I have ordered the lens hood from Heavystar, plus some rear deep lens caps I was searching for as well. While I was at it, I couldn't resist some nice Nikon F3 stuff either...

Now I only need to find a rear lens cap for the 5cm and a hood for the 3.5cm and I'm all set.

5cm rear caps

there is a seller on ebay with the caps, but i think they are reproductions, they don't fit snug on my lenses, i will have to check my receipts, i don't see them on ebay right now,

Back to the original post!!
The Value of a Nikkor 5cm f1.4 becomes evident when you take pictures with it!! Preferably with some B&W film, between f5.6 and f11....

Otherwise it's $150 to $250

Thanks Kiu. I bought the lens for 85 Euros and a generic lens hood and front lens cap on Ebay. The only item I need to find now is a rear lens cap. Any suggestions on where to find one?

I will take some pictures with it shortly. I take note of your suggestion to stop down to between f/5.6 and f/11, where I suppose the so-called "sweet spot" is. How do you find it performs wide open?
