I have a serious GAS attack on getting a nice M2/M3/M1. What would an M2 in good shape set me back? Is $530 a good price if the only defects are cosmetic? How much more should I expect to pay for an M3?

Thanks.

It's a good price if everything works and no major dings. I paid 700 for a
nice one with a recent CLA. A CLA will cost you US 80 - 150.

Dunno whether this is from a dealer or not, but on a camera of that age there's something to be said for a return privilege, in case there's more wrong than meets the eye (which is possible).

Having said that, you can fix pretty much anything on an M2...for a price.

thanks all for the feedback. I'm going to drop by B&H on my way home to handle an M2 and make up my mind. Seller is offering me full refund and he says it was CLA'd less then a year ago.

I would say look here first. Sellers here seem to be more open and honest that on say EvilBay.

Check with folks about the cost of CLA. You might look at DAG or Sherry as the top of the line, other folks might do a good a job but have not been in it as long or perhaps as openly raved about. I really like what DAG has done for me, I'm going to send Sherry an 85/2 for a CLA over the summer.

Someone had a great result recently elsewhere, but I do not remember who or where.

I sold a beautiful M2 with a recent CLA on ebay last month for under $700.
(and I'm an open and honest guy! )
I've also have bumped into other RFFers on ebay and wouldn't discount it as an option.

I bought a perfectly good (if rather worn) M2 on ebay a couple of months ago for £350. This is fairly cheap for the UK. The camera is absolutely fine. Beware the "I don't know anything about cameras..." type of ebay seller though.

thanks all. I took the plunge. From the pictures and what the seller says, it looks to be a very nice looking user with a recent CLA. Now if I could get my hands on a 35 or 50 lens for it...

As I just posted in another thread, I received my M2 yesterday. I promptly ran over to Tamarkin in NYC to pair it with a Dual Range Summicron 50. It had been my intention to get a $40 or so lens to carry me over until I could afford a real one, but after I handled the Summicron on Saturday, I just knew I had to have it. I couldn't believe this lens was 40 or 50 years old. I had never seen anything so beautiful. It's too bad the lens does not work on my Bessa, but then again, I can see myself parting with that to get another lens for the M2.

I'll try to post a few shots from my first roll tonight. Nothing to rave about, probably more of a sense of accomplishment on my part.
