Value of Canon Camera and lens

A friend of mine has a IV SB2 in near mint condition. Included with it is a recently cleaned 50mm f1.5 lens. Neither of us are familiar with the value of this kit. I'm wondering its value. He does want to sell it. Thanks in advance ... Ray
 
Canon LTM bodies are at an all time low - $400 for a IVSB2 is a dreamers price, the IIF2 is like 10X rarer than a IVSB2 and I know someone who was trying to sell one for $500 now for nearly 8 months with no takers!

The camera body might bring $200/$250 tops

But, the lens - I would`nt sell a f1.5 for under $350, (if it has the original marked f1.5/50 Canon hood add $75) the lens is more valuable than the camera is and it`s somewhat of a famous cult lens, I haven`t seen one sold online now here or on evilbay for at least 2 months......

Tom, I've been doing some snooping around on the internet and your pricing seems about right. I'm going to ask him tomorrow if he's got the hood. I know he has the original case for the camera. Being a Leica guy he just wants to sell the Canon.
 
For someone looking for a great shooter, the IV-Sb2 is arguably the best and last of the Canon Barnack style bodies, and is beautifully matched with the 50/1.5. That Sonnar formula lens is not just a cult classic, but a lens that produces fine images, by almost everyones standards.

If the owner was willing to sell for around $600, he should find a happy buyer quite quickly. He could probably hold out for a higher price, with a longer sell time. If the condition is accurate, and the mechanics are good, a solid buy for a commited buyer.

I wish I were in the market.....

I own 2 Canon P's with 35/50/100 lenses and think of selling to have the cash when the new Fuji folder arrives (if it won't be overpriced).

Clean Canon P plus Canon 50mm/1.8 just sold for US $207.50.

Yes Jim, but Sam`s had that camera now for about 4 years......

I bought that IIF2 he had for the same price *early last year and have since sold it* (they only made 2,625 of them in 1955) so it`s one of Canon`s rarest RF cameras.

My IIF2 (my user - second one I owned) and my f1.5 are a great shooting team.

Sadly Canon "knob tops" don`t bring Leica prices, even the rare one`s hang around for a long time, I was very forturnate to have a client who was buying for a Photographic museum and the IIF2 <EP> combo with a very rare <EP> f1.5, rapidwinder and rapidwinder case were truly EX++ and I sold them for a little under $1,000, this is very rare in the Canon world, as I`ve said the lens is worth MORE than the body in this case.
*These cameras have somewhat of a cult status, though rangefinder collectors overlook them greatly, the build quality is equal to and somewhat better than the compatable Leica IIIFRD - there`s some photographers who live by these cameras and I love my IIF2 both as a rare collectable and as a great shooting camera*

Ohh just for the record they made 34,975 IVSB2`s - so it`s not a rare camera, I think that it`s one of the highest production runs of the "knob tops" because it was so successful

The IVSB2 is about the ultimate Canon "knob top" RF camera you can buy (easily) and with the f1.5 would be the best lens to use on it, the IVSB2 will also work with the very robust Canon rapidwinder bottom.

If you put it on here for $425 (together with the lens) it should be gone in less than 2 hours - someone should jump on this camera, it`s a perfect shooting experience.....

That Canon P that was sold for just over $200 was described as a nice one, but the "dealer" offering it has only 4 feedbacks... That may have reduced the possible bidders, because of no real track record. Or maybe an old dealer with a bad record starting a new career. Ebay is still a crap shoot.

As mentioned by Leica Tom, $425 would go QUICK. I still think my figure of $600 would also sell reasonably fast, especially with a return privilege. That could be maybe pretty tight, by having the equipment returned and checked before any return money was sent back. An actual buyer wouldn't mind those terms, because they would deal honestly, IMHO.

Something in the middle of the 2 numbers should go quite fast, also. It's a really nice shooting kit (I can duplicate it, camera and lens), and is fun to use and super for street work. It's small, quiet, and looks old and innocent.

Yeah, he should join here and also get a "feel"for that lens, (maybe mount it on his M Leica if that`s what he`s shooting with) - while it`s at the top of the list of all time world`s greatest lenses, I think it performs better than the lens it was made to copy from in the first place (the pre war CZJ f1.5.50 Sonnar).........most people I know who have sold f1.5/50 Canon`s have regretted it later on, a clean CLA`d version is`nt easy to come by nowadays 😉
