Vancouver for an extended time.

Hey guys.

Next week work's sending me to Vancouver for an extended time (~5 months, so it appears...).
I'll probably be busy for most of the week but weekends should be free to roam and explore, camera in hand. So a few questions for those in the know...

Where are some unique and interesting places to wander/photograph? I'm sure I'll find plenty of my own after being there for such an extended time, but recommendations for places to give me a good head start will be appreciated. I'll be living Downtown for the duration, and have a car, so I'll be mobile in my spare time too.

Also, are there some good stores catering to us film shooters/self-developers? I've been debating bringing some new D76 and Fix powder with me, but if I can get it locally I'll just do that. Is film not too hard to get locally (Tri X and Portra are my poisons) Internet rumours suggest Beau Photo Supplies could be a go-to for that?

Anyway, this is getting lengthy! Thanks for any help you can give me. I'm pretty excited about spending such a long preiod of time in what seems to be an awesome city.

Joe...I wish we had more wind. I grew up here and am used to all the rain. Besides, it wouldn't be so green without all that rain.

It is looking like we might not have a winter at all this year as we are experiencing double digit temps.

i grew up in nyc where it rained a fair bit too...i actually am pretty ok with the wind and rain...except now when i visit and it rains for the week that i am there...lol!

I'm envious! Vancouver is one of my favorite cities to visit, even with the rain. I like hanging out at Granville Island (be there for the 10th annual winterruption festival in February).

When I'm there, I try to set aside some time to see Victoria Island and make it a point to go to Whistler (about 120km north of Vancouver).

Chris, get in touch with me when you get here and I can steer you towards the few stores that still stock chemistry. Not worth the trouble to bring it. If needed I can lend you Paterson tanks/reels as I have plenty.
You will also be here for the April Camera Swap in April. Have you any idea where you will be staying?
Looking forward to seeing you here - and as for the rain, at the moment it is +11 and bright sunshine - though some rain next week.

Thanks for all the words everyone. I've never heard anyone say a bad thing about the place so I'm looking forward to experiencing everything it's got to offer for the 5 months I'm in town.

Tom - I'll be sure to drop you a line when I get to town. Work's putting me up in an apartment downtown (along West Georgia) and I'll have a car too so getting around will be easy. Hopefully I get a good amount of spare time to enjoy the place. I'm looking forward to getting there.

Hi Chris, When you decide to make it over to Vancouver Island give a shout.
I'm located near where the ferry docks about 20km north of Victoria the capital city.
Been here since 1978 so guess that makes me an oldtimer.

Perhaps this might also be a good excuse for me to jump on the ferry and come to Vancouver for a day or two. Have never met Tom in person, perhaps I could join a meet up if one happens?
