My old boss was Penn's Studio Manager. Avedon and Penn had studios in the same building for a time. He would often ride up to work in the building's elevator with both Penn and Avedon onboard. The two famous photographers were good friends. He road silently, listening to the conversation between the two.
There's a Penn portrait of Avedon with a hand over one eye.. the way the camera sees.
A photographer friend, assisted for Avedon for a couple of years. There were lots of stories. Penn worked for Vogue a lot; Avedon for Harper's. Penn was a quiet, reserved, man, Avedon, more out going and political.
I think, their work is very reflective of who they were.. beyond any art direction.

Hi Robert;
A good selection. The photo of Nicole Kiddman was Penn's last Vogue cover, if i remember correctly. It was made in his daylight studio. The studio had a wall of dirty North Light windows.
The portrait of the Girl With Freckles, is not a Penn photo .. I know his work. It's not his or, even close to the way he lights his subjects. I don't know who edited that web piece?

Yes, that's the one. Sorry, i should have mentioned it. The Freckled Girl caught my interest.
There's a portrait of Josef Koudelka that's been published. I don't recall when Penn made it. He admired Koudelka and his work, and said so publicly. Which was rare for Penn as, he rarely gave his opinion other than through his work.

Around 2000 I took part in a workshop led by Amy Arbus and she often told us about her experience during a Master Class with Avedon!

I have two books from Avedon: "Evidence 1944-1994" and "Richard Avedo Portraits".
I read in Avedon was a very energic man, photographer. I remember Amy Arbus told ud many times that during his Masterclass he always repeated to his students that in photography no goals can be reache without Energy.
His mantra was Energy, Enthusiasm, Emotion.
Which applies not only to photography but to life in general.
