anyone know which frame lines the 40mm f1.4 prompts? does the lens need to be modified to bring up the 35mm lines?

It will bring up the 50mm framelines but can be easily modified to bring up the 35 lines.
Lots of people like it. But for me, it was one of the only lenses (of about 20) I've ever tried on my own M8 that didn't focus correctly. It front focused by about 5 inches up close.

It's a bit late this evening for me to try to offer a description. But basically you can file down one of the flanges to make the lens bring up the 35 frame lines. Maybe someone else will have a link handy for how to do it.
Really, though you can look inside the camera body and see the small lever that adjusts the framelines. Then you can tell which corresponding flange on the lens needs to be filed. It's pretty easy to do - just make sure you don't get any metal shavings inside the camera body.
I've not actually tried the 40 on a different body. Though I did try two different versions of the 40 on my M8. Since everything else I've tried (including a 75 lux) focuses accurately, I decided to just give up on the 40.

This is my "body cap" lens. I always have it on my M8. John Milich modified it to bring up 35mm framelines and added pits for coding. I have mine coded as a 35mm Summilux. Spectacular lens.

I have 2 CV 40mm's(SC and MC). Both focus correctly on my M8, although I use them more on the M3 and M4-P. I have filed down the flange to bring up the 35mm frame line on the M8 and M4-P. On the M3 I use the entire viewfinder for the 40mm, on the M4-P, the 35mm works just fine for me(YMMV).
You need to file less than a 1/16" from the flange to bring up the 35mm frame lines.
Both the CV and the 40 Summicron-C are great lenses on all M's, with the Sum-C being the most compact, but a stop more in exposure.

Nice lens. It matches the 35mm framelines very accurately from 1m out. Closer up you have to be more careful. You don't really need to code it either. No focus issue on mine.

right on! thanx for the info... now, seemingly foolish question. the "filing" part. exactly which way am i filing? in towards the element or travelling the circumference (spelling?)
i suppose i need to take a peek at the m8...

emraphoto: make sure to tape up the seems of the lens - you don't want to get any of the filings in there. This happens and you'll end up having to send it out for a cleaning & probably re-lubing. I've taped my 40 up so that only the flange that needs filing was exposed.

Taking the mount off is probably the best way to avoid the particles getting into the lens, but make sure you mark the lens & mount so that it's properly aligned when you put it back on .... if you lose this marking, it can be a PIA figuring out the proper alignment.... lots of this---->:bang:
