Well, I don't need to do a complete teardown,

I need to get to the inside surface of the front lens group that's in front of the aperture to clean some condensation spots.

So far I have only removed the name-ring, but I like to get some more info before I continue. Does the front lens group unscrew or is it held in place by another method?

As always, any advice appreciated

I put scotch tape over the front element and bezel, pushed on it with my thumb and twisted. It took a while, and some effort, but it finally came loose.

I used a little rubber block that fit inside the outer ring. It lay on top of the bezel without touching the glass.

Got rid of some water spots it suffered after I spent over three hours with it in the rain

We were all wet and miserable at that point though. The R-D1 kept on working eventhough I couldn't see through the Viewfinder anymore ;)

Confused. R-D1. Scenes from what looks like WWII.. Confused. Does not compute.
Awesome.

I did bring a proper Leica IIIc on that trip too. Honest. I just didn't want that one to get wet..
