Version 2.0 help

I have a ‘new’ refurbished R-D1 (not a R-D1s). I have read several notes on this forum concerning the ‘upgrade’ to firmware version 2.0. Mostly, the notes are pro. However, there are some disturbing comments on various downsides to the upgrade. Since one cannot go back to the original firmware version, perhaps it would be a good idea to collect all of the pros and cons of upgrading the R-D1 firmware. Then neophyte owners (like me) can make up their minds.

My otherwise-perfect RD-1 refurb came with about a half dozen hot pixels. The 2.0 firmware maps them out in a flash, whereas with 1.0 the camera needs to be sent back to Epson, or the owner has to clone out the hot pixels in every shot. So for me the upgrade was a no-brainer. I have zero complaints (so far) but of course then again I never used it with 1.0 to compare.

The only downside to the firmware upgrade was a shortened battery life. I don't condider that much a a problem since the battery life is about the same as a 2GB card. Just change them both at the same time. Simple

I'm not sure how you can be absolutely sure of this without access to the code, and extensive comparison of images side by side.

In any case, I really like the idea of JPG+RAW which v1 doesn't do, only one or the other. BTW, that feature could be a factor in the battery life reduction.

I have seen no downsides to the upgrade apart from very slightly reduced battery life. I ran the first version for about a year. First touch shutter response from screen, better histogram display, slightly lower 1600 iso noise are all worth having and my hot pixels were also cured by the upgrade.

IMO the firmware update was the best that could have happened. I experienced a reduced battery life (going from about 300 shots to about 200 shots). The added feautures of the update are well worth it.
