I got one myself.

Question: does changing the vertical alignment changes the horizontal alignment too? I can't seem to find a definitive answer... The reason I'd expect it *not to* is that otherwise why would Leica bother making only the vertical adjustment accessible without removing the top plate? (I have an M8)

Got one of those. It's for M4p, M6 and M7. No idea about M8.

On my film Ms, Changing vertical adjustment might have small effect on horizontal adjustment. The latter can be corrected via RF roller in the lens mount.

I'm trusting the M8 adjustment would use the same tool. From pictures of the M8 without the top it looks like it does. I'll see, I guess.

By the "RF roller" you mean the 2mm hex wrench adjustment trick? I remember reading a long rant on why that doesn't solve anything. I have to find it again...

For the M8 it's the hex wrench. On my films Ms it's a modified screw driver, like this:
