VinceC said:I shot prefessionally for several years with: A very used Nikon F, a Nikkormat and four primes -- 24/50/85/185. To save weight, I sometimes carried a 135/3.5 or 200/4 for the longer lens. A picky eBayer could put that kit together today for well, well, well under $1,000. Could probably do it for under $500 total if you opt for an alternative to the 180.
I picked up nearly all my SLR gear at pawnshops.
Excuss me VinceC, but the issue is not how do we get away instead of the couple of Leicas, and everybody has his/her own gate away, but your $1000 package as mine, although you can do a lot, is still very far from all the technical FUNCTIONS, the Leica performs.
What I am trying to say is that you are not really smart with five or seven thousand dollars for the dream package. Give me seven or ten thousand dollars for gear and I promise to outperform the weight lightness of the respected NG photographer.
It should not be infered that I think Mr David Alan Harvey is a NG photogrpher because of his gear of course, and I am sure he may do very well with a less costly gear package.
But under the camouflage of how-to-do-it, Mr Harvey doesn't really tells how to do it but chose the vulgar point of view of promoting himself, the unreacheable celebrity, so vulgar among pros.
Do you want to really explain things to your students ? Fine! then start with how to do it with $500 package around your neighbourhood and not exotic sites in which you ask girls to pass by time and again with their horses.
Do you want to really really go to the center of the issue ? Fine! then start developing the inner relationship between photographer and subject and don't pass by this crucial issue selling crap about how after 5 hours the fishermen became your buddies.
Do you want to really arise respect and recognition for your work ? Fine ! Then explain the secrets of art and photography to the broad public instead of showing yourself as a celebrity.
Have you ever been rich and never hungry as a non selling pro ? Why don't you show us a bit of your non fancy-commercial (and sometimes silly) pics in which your true passion was poured in ?
Haven't you ever been striken with some feeling at the poverty in Puerto Rico? No personal pic about it ?
It is about common people, art and photography Mr Harvey, not about the vulgar side of your self.
Cheers,
Ruben
