Very neat Leica Housing, tell me more!

Thanks for the link Roland,

Im definitely not in the market to buy one of these... woa what a price.

But this unusual housing has got me stewing,

Ive been looking at ways to attach a camera to the handlebars of my moped/bicycle, this housing seems like the perfect way to keep a camera safe in a fast paced environment. Especially those gravel roads.

Am I crazy, I think im going to !attempt! to replicate this in my shop, using plastics.

I see it described as a lens hood, can you elaborate on the need of such a large shroud? I can imagine a soldier dangling out of his Stuka canopy taking snaps of training exercises.

Is this a part of a larger rig? Possibly stabilized.

Joe, thanks for the encouragement!

Im thinking of heading to the thrift shops, find a suitable vessel to modify, then fiberglass.

Then there is always the possibility of making a silicone mold to further refine it in resin.

Should be an interesting project.

No one has any history on this piece? Lastly where is LeicaTom!? Youve got to have something for me Tom 😉

Leitz had a history of making very unusual and frankly quirky accessories. A more or less similar type of protective metal casing was made pre-war for use in Zeppelins, no less. I believe I have seen it in Van Hasbroeck's book documenting every Leica model and accessory. Or maybe one of my other books on Leitz. Interesting stuff. I have to say the one illustrated in the auction looks to be in too good condition. Perhaps it was refurbished?

The same or similar housing can be seen in Lager "Accessories" p. 83. Lager identfies it as "Lens hood for aerial photography (from Stukas) with 5cm 1:2 Summitar, lens, and rapid wind baseplate". He adds "The Archiv books do not mention the color of the hood although one could surmise that Luftwaffe gray would be appropriate".. the photos clearly show the camera mounted in the device

The one pictured on the auction is indeed a "refurb", i found reference to another site who claims there was a gentleman who acquired several of these unfinished, then took them all the way.

I agree grey would be more appropriate than olive drab.

Still very cool, is there a place online i can view said books?
