I've been filling up various digital cards with a variety of different kinds of photos, and have to move them around between three different computers in two locations...So I went down to Best Buy today, where I haven't been for a while, to look for portable transfer options, thinking to buy a 1 gig flash drive. Instead, I bought a Matsunichi 4-gig "mobiledrive" with a built-in, retractable USB 2.0 connector, for $90. It is about half the frontal size of a pack of cigarettes, and about half as thick. Weight is negligible. They have others (for more money) up to 8 gigs, in the same small package. Slips easily into a shirt pocket, plugs directly into any USB port. Don't know about reliability; if anything breaks, I'll post it.
One problem: they package it in nearly indestructable plastic; can't cut it with scissors, can barely cut it with a hunting knife. Almost sliced my hand open on a sharp plastic edge. Something's gotta be done about this whole packaging thing...

Good idea; here's another alternative: To solve the same problem, I bought a 30gb iPod. It's very pocketable, seems rugged, has fast access times, takes its power from the USB2 port so doesn't need a separate power supply, and has plenty of capacity.
It's quite a bit more expensive than JC's solution, but does include a very nice portable music/video player as a free bonus...
