Very sweet Leica model

They are expensive, which makes them a target, in many ways.

Harry

After thinking about "expensive" I really don't think they are. I own Canon 1DsII equipment that I use in the business. The MKII is $8000 US and the life expectancy before a new model comes out is about eighteen months. At that point the value drops to about half and then over the next year it drops about half that amount again. On the other hand, a Leica MP can be purchased new for under $4000 and the life of this camera is fifty years or more (don't give me the song and dance that film is dead). Over the next four or so years the value will rise and continue to rise. I purchased my first M2 used for $250 in 1968 and now look at the price.

FrankS said it best. My initial thought - Not all Leica folks buy the "year of the whatever" in optional yeti hide configuration. I love Leica but sold my M4-P a few years ago because I simply; A. couldn't afford their branded lenses and B. I had a real difficult time focusing with it. I still love my D2, (yup, I know, it's a Panasonic with Leica designed glass and a firmware twist), it has made a number of fine images for me. When I shoot film my more affordable solution is Voigtlander.
All this said I hope whoever goes for this set, the focal length choices are nice, actually takes it outside for a roll or two now and then.

And if you have a lot of extra "fun" money, there are investment opportunities. By the way, I have a toll bridge for sale, will fly anywhere to discuss.. just send ticket and expenses.
Hey...that was you with holding that sign on Tillary Street...! 😀

- Barrett (who won't sell the bridge, but might sublet it)

i like the colour.

Oh, I like the red, too - but not on a black camera! I think it'd look fine on chrome. On black, it looks like a mud pie with cherries.

I still can't see myself owning a body with covering in that color, but I can appreciate it!

what a useless camera. I can re-cover my M6 with red vulcanite and put a stupid signature up on top and pass it off as the same... pfftt

This is my first post and I was going to bite my tongue and not say anything, but this thread has degenerated into a discussion that sounds like something you would hear in a high school cafeteria. For all of the snide, sarcastic and cynical remarks, the only name I recognize in this thread as an internationally successful photographer is Ralph Gibson. Is this the best I can look forward to as member of this forum?

Welcome to RFF B. Czar
Check out the other threads -plenty of serious information and great pictures.
I too like Ralph Gibson's work - i've followed it for a long time however seeing this special edition on EBay is bound to throw up different responses. For 5K+ US i'd rather have a Nikon SP.

In my shallowness I thought that some forum members might be interested in at least seeing this camera. It is something different and I found it interesting. The thread degenerated and I was taken back by the negativity. Usually there isn't much of this treatment here but then I haven't posted for a while. I feel like I am on dpreview or photo.net. I must say that I am disappointed. It certainly isn't a good example for the new people.

Mango... the framelines remain always visible in this camera. I guess at a given moment this allows Gibson to visualize the same scene in three different ways, and then pull out his backup camera (the one that has the lens this one doesn't have) and takes the pic.

As for the maturity level in this thread... well... we're all taking a break from maturity here! 🙂

Because we don't like the camera? Why take this personal?

I thought it was funny that anyone would try to pass off that camera as an "excellent user that draws little attention", but what does this have to do with you? Nobody said anything about you. You have every right to like this camera if you want to.

Everyone's free to share their opinion. Cheers!

0 bids - I guess that is the comment of Leica users in general......I think Paleoboy has a point, the market for "special editions"is saturated. ( and not just in camera's). I doubt any serious Leica collector would buy this thing or any similar from the Bay. There are special auctions for that.

I typed up a response to B. Czar's first post, then decided not to post it. A while later I typed up another, but again did not post it, thinking it best to bite my tongue.

What Mango said.

BTW, how does Ralph get his eye to switch between 35, 50 and 90mm? Genetic engineering?

I think Gibson has been shooting long enough with M cameras to know before he brings the camera to his eye whether he wants to shoot with a 35, 50 or 90 lens. Why would he want the preview lever?

Yes, and according the Gibson lovers, we should all shoot like him and feel privileged to have the opportunity to own a preview lever-less leica.

I don't think that is an accurate statement, ywenz, and I'm not sure how helpful it is. It simply sounds like criticism of other members.

sure it's accurate. That sentiment was expressed when a nameless member jumped on the boat and said he/she can't believe the negativity against this camera when the only legitimate name is the name printed on the camera. And yes you are right, this was a criticism of other member.

The original thread was to generate feedback on a Leica that was up for sale. Why would anyone feel obligated to give us the "lesson" of why we shouldn't say anything negative about this camera? 😕
