I came across this video by Bloomberg on youtube today and it was posted on Nov.26 2012

"The World's Most Wanted Camera vs. the iPhone Era"

Thought it was interesting. Just wanted to share & exchange some thoughts about it.

Do you think Leica will keep up with the digital age? Do you think Leica will discontinue the Film bodys in the near future?

If you look at the trajectory of this forum over the last six or seven years, you can find some answers. Folks who once fretted over the cost of CLA'ing an FSU rangefinder now happily buy $2,000 dollar and $6,000 cameras. At the upper end, digital has reset the price point of photography in our minds.

Leica finally woke up to the fact that they couldn't sell on quality alone, but had to capitalize on the mystique surrounding their cameras, which they did successfully. They make quality stuff, no doubt about it. And there are a lot of folks able and willing to pay for what Leica sells.

Leica will do fine. As for film cameras? I don't think they will introduce a new one. But, I suspect that as long as film lasts, and perhaps beyond, people would still buy new film Leicas. But I'm not sure Leica wants to keep making them. There is clearly more money in digital for Leica.

but they are forced to produce them in favor of this traditional aspect and the myth surrounding the company. at the beginning of this month they were producing 50 Leica M, 10 Leica M Monochrom and 2 Leica M7/MP per day

Do you think development of film will disappear as a whole? I'm saving up for a Leica MP, maybe I should be saving up for an m9?

I think it is more likely that digital will disappear, and that lenses will disappear. In theory, you could make photographs without a lens and a sensor, and get it 3d right away. At a certain point you will get instant holograms out of your wristwatch - and, so what? People still paint on canvas, even if we have Epson printers.
