Video: The Sartorialist shooting on the street

Most of his stuff has been shot with the old Canon 50mm/1.4 EF. He probably only took out the 85L for this documentary because it looks more impressive.... Image is everything!

By the way, he has a girlfriend named Garance Dore, who has a similar fashion/image blog, originating from France, but since translated to English. Scott gave her a 5D at some point.

do landscape photographers debate among themselves if another's work is truly "landscape enough" if the photograher did't shoot the scene with a large format camera or if he/she properly exposed for the zone system?

was it taken with a leica? was the lens between 28-50mm (because 75mm-135 is cheating)? TriX & D76? Did the subjuct notice that their picture was taken? was black gaffers tape involved? does the photographer carry a billingham bag or use an artisan&artist wrapped around the wrist stylishly? has the photographer mastered the esspresso-in-one-hand-leica-in-the-other double fist shooting technique?

"street or not street" being validated by technique and camera over what the photograph says is an asinine discussion.

Scott Schuman's work documents real people, authentically. Without being obtuse. Its beautiful work and a valid form of "street photography." Why anyone is debating "street or not" is beyond me.

+1 from moi.

Thanks for posting. I love his blog, he has a great eye - this exaclty the kind of documentary arftform that works on the web, where it wouldn't anywhere else. He shoots one outfit every day, day-in, day out. I love, too, how he will shoot random old gentlemen in tweed, or whatever, and has no preconceptions about what looks cool.

PS: can we lose the pointless 'street' debate, which has nothing to do with this thread? It's a bit like when you're having a discussion in the pub, and a nearby drunk suddenly interrupts at the mention of one word they recognise.

As recently as 2008, when I took the above shot, I think he was still using a crop-factor body & a kit lens. David Adamson, (man on the left) who was printing his photos for a show @ his gallery, told me that he recommended an upgrade to full-frame (easier to make bigger prints, etc.). Glad to see he took David's advice.

I love to see young people using all these tools to invent careers for themselves! This isn't street photography, and he doesn't claim it is. It's fashion photography, and style blogging, and it's evidently making him a living. He'll probably end up doing layouts in Vogue! Photography is, for him, only a tool for illustrating his blog which was born of his interest and deep understanding of style at the high end. Kudos to this inventive and imaginative young guy! Thanks for posting!

I agree completely - his blog is ephemeral, yet it adds up to a great celebration of people and their individuality.

And for the life of me, beyond the fact that the title says he shoots on the street, I don't see where street photography, as we know it, comes into this.

I'm not a fashion freak in any sense of the word, but I love his blog. I like his approach and attitude. And he takes some nice pictures too. Street or not? Couldn't care less.

Coming to this late but I check out the blog periodically and very much enjoyed the short film.

I really like the colors he's getting. They have a nice softness to them. Great work, however you'd like to label it.
