what viewfinder should i use for using this lens. it is in between35 and 50?

I use the 35 and compensate, find it easier than compensating out from the 50 frame...

Yes, but remember that on the R-D1 the FOV of the 40 is ~60mm and VC don't make a 40D finder. I don't know of any 60mm finder..

With my 40mm (a Summicron-C) no viewfinder is necessary.
The 35mm frame fits perfectly.

Indeed, I have both the 35 and 40mm Summicrons, and the Epson '35' framelines fit the 40mm lens a lot more accurately than they do the 35mm, so I use that lens in preference.

In Leica bodies, the 35 frame is nearly an exact match for a 40mm lens at infinity. Within 5ft. or so you'll need to frame a bit generously to avoid lopping off the top of heads or people's feet.

If you want a 60mm finder, use a Nikon Zoom finder.
