I have an Olympus OM-D. When I press the shutter release, the viewfinder goes black momentarily. Since the OM-D is a mirrorless camera, I see no reason for the blackout. Does the Fuji X-E1 do this, or is the subject always viewable with no interruption?

The Fuji blacks out during exposure. Mirrorless cameras use a LCD screen for viewing. Simply, when you trip the shutter, the camera diverts the light to the sensor.

Okay, next question: does the X-Pro1 with its optical viewfinder black out during exposure?

I don't own a XPro-1, but that should not. Because it is optical, and you are viewing through a non-LCD viewfinder, there is nothing to black out.
