viewfinder mag?

Ya'll think Zeiss or 3rd party may at some point introduce a viewfinder mag piece? My eyes are progressively becoming worse as I age, and I'm only in my late 20's 🙁 Getting harder for me to work with the 85 focal length. 🙁

It's not your eyesight, it's the size of the 85mm framelines. My Leica has the 0.85x finder, still it's no fun at all composing with the 90mm.

It'd make the ZI's finder almost 1:1. But of course, whether the metering display remains visible is another matter.

I don't think that would screw in and stick to the ZI viewfinder? Or is this thing a one-size-fits-all?? Oh, and how to purchase, since I'm in the states?

Not worried about the metering display, I rarely see it, anyway.

You might explore the Nikon DG-2 eyepiece magnifier, which is compatible with the Nikon FM3a. It's my understanding that the Zeiss Ikon eyepiece is the same one used for the Nikon FM3a. I think that the DG-2 will work on the ZI as well.

Do eyepiece extender's also exist for that camera, such that I could have the eyepiece further out from the camera, or right angle finder or something like that? I'd love that! Time for me to go to the shop and see what they have for the nikon.

Speaking as someone in the vision field, I'm surprised you're having difficulty with the 85 framelines at that young of age. If it's not too personal, are you correctable to 20/20 with spectacles or contacts? I would expect a person with poor vision that needed thick spectacle lenses to have more difficulty visualizing the 28 framelines but not the 85. Of course, causes other than uncorrected refractive error may be medically related not easily amenable with a simple optical correction via contacts or glasses. I'd be more than happy to offer some suggestions with more information.

If you don't think this will work, why do you believe the DG-2 will? 😕

The fact is, ZI has the same eyepiece as the Nikon FM/FE series as well as the Bessa R2/3/R-D1. Contact Megaperls and tell them you plan to use it on a DSLR.

The DG-2 is 2x which will result in roughly 1.5x total magnification, under which the 85mm framelines may not be completely visible, not to mention its much larger physical size.

awilder, thanks for the input, my father is an ophthalmologist, he takes good care of me. I don't wish to go into my problems here, thanks for understanding 🙂 All you need to know: I have difficulty not with the framelines, but with the patch itself -- I can't really tell when objects overlap. I'm assuming the size of the patch will appear bigger with a magnifier, so I'll be able to fine tune the focus better. If my assumptions are incorrect, then please let me know.

Mazurka: I don't know much about viewfinders. I thought the eyepiece for the leica and the zi are different sizes, so one thing that screws into the leica might not fit into the ZI... *shrug* Hopefully that makes sense. It was mentioned that the ZI finder is the same as the nikon one, so the assumption here is that the dg-2 would screw into the ZI viewfinder. I will test this out sometime in the next couple weeks 🙂

The RD-1 and ZI have same viewfinder access? I'll look into it, but the nikon dg-2 looks like it goes for about $30, compared to the $75 of the megapearls. *shrug*

The 2x Nikon magnifier is an excellent accessory and they're cheap enough to buy a spare. I periodically use them on my Leica to verify the rf accuracy and sometimes piggyback them to get a total 4x magnification for checking really precise rf adjustments.
