Are you staying in Socorro?
Hmm. I bought my first Sun SPARC workstation in Socorro. I can't remember the exact name of the school -- New Mexico School of Mining and Explosions? Anyway, they were surplussing some of their computer equipment. This was back in the 1990's and I got a couple Sparc-2 and IPX machines. A Sparc-10 on a later run.
No I’m staying in Carrizozo and occasionally in Las Cruces, but I’m driving all over.
I'm afraid to ask about Las Cruces. I lived along Hwy 70 out of town toward the missile range. Used to rock climb that beautiful slab just over the pass and to the south (out Aguirre Springs Rd). If you've been there, you know what I'm describing. I hear Cruces has exploded in size and population -- spreading all over. This rumour is the primary reason I haven't visited friends there for years now.
I've been in Carrizozo area more than a few times. I know it used to be nice. Hopefully still is.
I like this. Probably because it reminds me of many early mornings birdwatching with my friend in the pecan orchards just south of Old Mesilla. Early morning is in general a great time to be in NM.
Old Town Mesilla is where I'd really live if I was here, and actually Carrizozo is a place I could live in too.
Not hijacking your thread Vince! I keep going back to this old place in Mesilla. The last time I was there I had a camera on a tripod and the woman from next door came out to chat. Well she owns the place, which is empty inside now. Said she and her husband (gone now) rented it to a variety of tenants over the years but now it needs (she thinks) $100k worth of work and sits empty. A shame. Would make a nice photographers gallery!
