The more I study the work of Van Gogh, the more I wonder if anyone has actually tried to take a photograph of the same landscapes, etc. that are included in his paintings. It would be interesting to see how similar they may be, or how much has actually changed in the years since.

And, then, what photographer could best be described as an impressionist equivalent?🙂

Dunno, but make sure you don't catch your ears when you put the camera strap over your head. 😀

There is a sequence in Kurosawa's Dreams starring Martin Scorsese as Vincent where a number of his landscapes are recreated. My guess is though that a lot of the scenes would be unrecognizably changed if you would visit.

Does hand colouring count? I'll see if I can find and scan a print of Frances's Church at Auvers, which is surprisingly similar to Vincent's picture.

She's mislaid the negative of Pink House with the Green Shutters next to the Yellow House, and we don't have a print at the moment because it sold at her last exhibition. The original Yellow House, incidentally, was destroyed by allied bombing.

Isn't there a sign (with a reproduction of the painting) marking the spot where he painted Church at Auvers? I bet there are million photos of that view.

Gary

Dear Gary,

I don't think there was at the time Frances took the shot, and if there was, it's not in shot. But that was a few years ago.

In any case, her pic was (a) taken with a full frame fish-eye (b) printed on paper curved into an 'S' on the easel and (c) heavily hand colored.

Cheers,

R.
