Hi. I have cv ultron 35 1.7 and to my eye it renders too modern looking pictures with boring bokeh. So I'm looking for something more vintage. I was looking for w-nikkor 3.5cm f2.5 ltm. I like that swirly bokeh and the whole lens character from samples I found on the net. But maybe you could recommend some other potential choices for 35mm ltm. It should be at lest 2.8, but preferably brighter. Oh and my budget is limited (300-400$).

Thanks

Have you tried the FSU stuff, like Jupiters or Industar? It might be worth checking out.

For 300-400 you can get the Canon 35/1.8 or 35/2.8, or even the 35/2 if you are patient. Signature of the 35/2 might be too modern for your taste.

There are also different Komura 35 lenses, reputed to be good, but I have never tried.

It is worth waiting for the Nikkor 35/2.5 though - an excellent and tiny lens.

Roland.

If you're looking for swirly, you want to shoot a Tessar (or one of its variants) wide open.

But these usually aren't available in focal lengths shorter than 45mm (except for the f/8 2.8cm Tessar -- but at f/8, you won't get the swirlies).

I'm not sure of what the Leica equivalent is. Elmar? Hektor? I don't know the Leica lenses.

Canon 35mm f1.8 ltm
I've only had mine a week

Here's a sample (Kodak TriX at 800iso)

Try the Leica Summaron 35mm f3.5. Small, cheap and good image quality. Its worth a try and is available in both LTM and M mount versions. The LTM version is even smaller. (It can be prone to developing the typical Leica grunge on the interior of lens surfaces though so you may need to factor in the cost of a CLA.) All in all its a nice lens with a vintage signature.

Funny you should mention this lens. I just finished scanning my first roll with it. Sample attached (sorry for the preliminary scan, dust and all), no adjustments. Close focus, I believe at f:2.8, Walgreens (Fuji) 200 film.

This one was $300 with a Leica IIIf BD shaped rear cap 😉

I have the Nikkor 3.5cm F2.5 in S-Mount, and the F1.8. Neither really exhibits "swirly Bokeh" associated with astigmatism. The Canon 35/2.8 is well corrected, lower-contrast for a "kodachrome 10" type look.

The Elmar 3.5cm F3.5 is probably the lens to get, is a 4-element design.

batterytypehah!, I would love to see some more pics from this lens, as well as some samples from komura 35 2.8 if anyone has it.

The Canon Serenar 35/3.5 should look rather similar to the Elmar 35/3.5, and is certainly cheaper. The Elmar is priced on collector value (rarity), rather than optical performance. Both are Tessar formula. The Serenar will be well-coated, the Elmar is likely to be uncoated.

Easiest path to swirly is a Summar 50/2.0, but it pays to get a good one, which is challenging.

Thanks, the CLE doesn't have frame lines for 35mm, so I used the 40 and wasn't sure where the frame would end.
I also thought the blacks chocked up a bit more then I would have liked in that shot.

filmtwit, that museum shot is so beautiful! I like its composition, its narrative, its tone... Everything!

Cheers,

Juan

Hang on, I received this lens recently and have yet to scan the first roll I shot with it, I'll get the shots up somewhere the next week.

Sold a 35/3.5 W.Acall to justify the W.Komura 35/2.8. I loved the 35/3.5 but it was too tiny for my big fingers, they kept popping up in the corner of my shots :bang: Fellow RFF-er rlouzan has one as well, RFF-er sdifaz bought mine. They might be willing to chime in here.

Johan,

I haven't shot the Acall as yet, I'm planning too this weekend. I'm kind of intrigued as to its performance and look. As soon as I have some scans I'll chime in with some impressions and some pictures... Great little lens by the way, Thanks!
