I shall have to go out and get electricians tape to hide my shame.
The M9 on-camera post-processing thing has a "Vintage B&W" setting. Why not HDR while they were at it?
I must console myself with the the idea that this feature probably kept the price down to mass-market levels.

I do not think you should. While I can make a film shot look like digital in B&W - through use of noise reduction to smooth the grain, by clipping the highlights and removing the tonality through 8 bit curve processing, I have never been so far able to do the opposite. So, maybe Leica has the magic bullet at hand - to make a digital B&W look like film ! THIS would be news...

Ah ... I knew there was a reason I hadn't ordered an M9 to replace my aging M8 ... I now feel vindicated! :D

Oh yeah. Let's start a digital vs. film debate. Would be completely new for this forum.

This is about Leica 'selling it's birthright for a mess of pottage'. Maybe I can ask for customized firmware. The black tape is ok for now.

If you are clipping highlights on digital cameras, you ain't watchin' the histogram. Come on, didn't anyone here every shoot slide film?! (sorry, just had to stir the pot a little :)

"Filters" to artistically alter a digital file is in reality...an "illustration" process rather than a photographic process. Adding special plug in filters to make a file look like a particular film is the classic example.

I just got my M9... what are we talking about here? Is it just on jpeg settings?

"In the Bible, Jakob and Esau were twins. Esau was born first, and was his father's heir. When their father was dying, Esau the hunter went out to try to find meat for his father, and came back famished, having failed to find any game. Jakob had prepared a meal of lentils, and Esau asked for some. Jakob set the price at Esau's inheritance. Esau replied "Of what use is this birthright to me? For behold, I am an-hungered and like to die.", and he sold his birthright for a mess of pottage. Thus the phrase means to exchange something of great value for immediate gain. "

Just a little puzzled why anyone buying a digital camera would shocked to find a B&W conversion feature in the camera's menu. It remains to be seen if Leica sold it's birthright for a mess of pottage. If Leica survives and grows then I guess the answer would be no.

Good points, and being fair Leica are after all a niche camera manufacturer and survival in such hard economic times is going to be far harder for companies like this with far smaller turnovers than the big boys.

Personally (S2 price excluded! :bang: ) I don't think Leica are doing too bad at striking a balance right now in our digital age.

Gimme a break. What a snob.

Personally, I don't think Leica has kept prices down to a mass market level. They are far above the price of some FF DSLRs that are just barely at the extreme end of the mass market level price bracket.

I'm confused. It says Esau the hunter went out to find meat for his old man and came back half starved. Yet if he'd had the sense, he would have just looked in the cupboard and found lentils (like Jacob did). No wonder he gave away his entire inheritance for a bowl of casserole. What a dumbass . . .
