vinyl and film - what a waste

Vinyl and film are not the only things to be "a waste"...

Case in point, the shipment I just received 1/2h ago: 25ml of hazelnult concentrate ( a bottle no more than 3" high) in a box that measures 12" x 8" x10"!

The box could have contained enough hazelnut to make double that amount of concentrate!

Don't think that because when you buy it in your local shop without a large cardboard box that it didn't arrive at your local shop in a large cardboard box. You don't see their packaging, but it is there just as well.

That is a good point but I hope that from big reseller to smaller reseller it's packed with more efficiency in mind.

Funny, I just sold my record player. I actually prefer digital nowadays. Not having to get up to flip the record actually enhances my listening pleasure, especially with the trend of 180gr with the requisite 2 records instead of one, even if the recording is less than 45min. But I'm going through a "Sell it all!" phase...

Now I have to get a bunch of cardboard so i can sell the rest of my records. 🙂

Compared to the low quality 105g records from the 80s/90s the now available 180g records are really nice to handle and offer better quality.

How much information you get on one record depends a bit on the sound quality you want to achieve.

For sure. Some of the LP's they sold in the late '80's were of very low quality. They were competing with cassettes. Everything is better compared to then, though I do miss tape trading...

Discussing the diminishing returns of audio equipment is a fools game. To be avoided! Would be worse than the pen knife thread.

I'd agree, but as my screen name implies, I'd like to stay employeed. 🙂 It does suck that I'm out here growing trees, and I don't have a place close by to recycle paper. Or anything really. Glass, metal etc.

On the bright side, most paper products come from relatively fast growing species of trees. What gauls me is seeing hardwoods cut for pallet material. Having worked for a building supply company before finding a job in my academic field, I have seen a lot of pallets go to waste after one use. Many were perfectly good for multiple uses. While others could be repaired from the scraps from broken pallets. Maybe not a big money maker, but it would offer relatively low skilled people employment while minimizing the waste of hardwoods.

Don't let them brain-wash you.

Don't let them brain-wash you.

Eco-Nazi at some point will introduce mild version of "Fahrenheit 451", if not already. Books will become taboo. Just read it from your mobile, which is made in China where ecology doesn't exists as they don't have sewage treatment plants in some 1 Million cities.

Packaging in OP is fully recyclable. No reason for self-shame.
Film is the backup. It is not the image in the file, which you have to migrate from one hard drive to another periodically to be able to retrieve it with current computer interface and OS. Or "cloud" provider will do exactly the same for you. They have to constantly update their storage. Lots of energy and natural resources are wasted to keep it going.

Vinyl is recyclable as well. Most of the records I have are second hand.
My Marantz amp and two DUAL TT from seventies are also second hand. They are build to be serviceable. Not as modern equipment where they have to charge you recyclying fee, because it is not build to be serviceable, but to go on the dump.

When I was eight or so, I was always super happy to see cardboard boxes in the mail. They make a great base material for castles, spaceships, submarines (until they hit the water) and volcano lairs.

What kills me is the short life of paper bags.
Their useful time (carting groceries from store to home) is about 0.01% of their existence. Then they get transported, shredded and reformed into another bag. Seems like an extravagent process for a short simple task. (Bringing home the groceries.)

The two best grocery-related purchases I ever made were a fabric reusable shopping bag and a folding crate. I keep them in the back of my car and haven't had to use a paper or plastic bag in ages.

All things are impermanent, but that doesn't mean what we think it means. If the cardboard ends up in a land fill it breaks down quickly, returns to it's basic chemical elements, the rain allows it to be drawn into the roots of nearby trees and vegetation for sustenance, and it is reborn as another tree.

There is no waste in the universe. It is impossible for matter to be created or destroyed, it is simply changed into different forms. All the atoms that ever existed still exist, and will till the end of time (no one knows if such a thing actually exists). It's called the cycle of life. There can never be waste as energy is simply turned into different forms of energy. All of us, the tree, the sky, the cat, the termite, the clouds, will exist forever, just in different forms, and those forms are not fixed, they are ever-changing. Change is the only constant.

Ah yes, but...all natural and technological processes proceed in such a way that the availability of the remaining energy decreases.

In all energy exchanges, if no energy enters or leaves an isolated system the entropy of that system increases.

Energy continuously flows from being concentrated to becoming dispersed, spread out, wasted and useless.

New energy cannot be created and high grade energy is being destroyed.

An economy based on endless growth is UNSUSTAINABLE!

The fundamental laws of thermodynamics will place fixed limits on technological innovation and human advancement.

In an isolated system the entropy can only increase.

A species set on endless growth is UNSUSTAINABLE!

Sorry, I couldn't resist a bit of Muse 🙂

My missus is a Vinyl Nazi and won't allow CDs or other digital music to be played in the living room. 1s and 0s are strictly confined to the kitchen and my work headphones.

don't be too quick to feel bad about vinyl and film. streaming may not be any better, and could be worse. just look for some life cycle assessments (LCA).

🙂

Take a picture of a darkroom and the text is still true.

True? Maybe in New York...

I have complete DR set for free and Omega D5 XL for 100$. It is very common way and price.
My TT are 100$ each.
Earplugs for streaming could cost same price as all my darkroom and audio set.

Computer free image processing is convinient and healthier these days and it is easy and convinient to put record on plate and read text of the song without computer as well.

Sitting on your prostate while listening from computer and editing on computer is as convinient as driving car. Makes you fat. Printing in darkroom and by same time dancing while vynil is playing is the way to go!

Lol. We just ordered a 1 inch screw for our Nikon microscope (at work). It came in a 12x12 cardboard box with packing peanuts.
