On April 2nd, 2012, the Virginia Museum of Transportation, located in Roanoke, VA, marked it's 50th Birthday with a cake and ice cream reception for the public. On hand were the VMT Board of Directors, and Mayor David Bowers with the Roanoke City Council.
To celebrate the big event, the City of Roanoke, VA turned over ownership of the Norfolk and Western Railway Class J 611, and Class A 1218 steam locomotives to VMT. Both are considered the top of steam locomotive design, and were built in Roanoke at the N&W East End Shops, just east of the VMT location, which is the former N&W Roanoke Freight House.
Many people have been involved in making this day happen, and attendance has almost tripled in the last ten years. The Norfolk Southern Corporation, which was formed when the N&W merged with the Southern Railway, has been instrumental in giving the museum logistical help in arranging the rolling stock, and is in the process of cosmetically restoring the NW 1776 EMD SD-45 in the Chattanooga, TN shops. It will return this summer for another celebration.
The Virginia Museum of Transportation will hopefully last at least another 50 years, and continue to preserve the history of Virginia's rail, aviation, water, and automotive modes of transportation.

Thanks, Charles. I may have to retire the Canon though, if it keeps wanting to act up. On frame 16 it started putting the date on the picture, even though I did not have the imprinter selected. You can't accidentally start it, as it has a recessed button that must be pressed with a plastic utensil on the camera strap, and is hidden behind a door. That, and some of the other anomalies which happen everytime you load and unload film make me think the electronics are going bad. And it's such a nice camera, too.

Beemermark, those are great shots. I missed the oppotunity to be down there when they had the 1218 placed, as we were quite busy showing off the 611 at the same time. I've got some decent photos of it from the time it and the 611 were on display for the East End Shops 100th (or maybe it was 125) birthday celebration. Need to get them posted sometime.
